George L. Soper
1925-2017
Grateful for a life well lived, the family of George L. Soper
announces his passing which occurred Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at the
Saint John Regional Hospital. Born on October 12, 1925 in Carsonville,
NB, he was a son of the late George B. and Della (Hayes)
Soper.
George is survived by his loving wife, Mary (Lowham) Soper
and his son David (Janet) Soper. He was predeceased by his son Douglas
Soper and sisters Marilyn Erb and Bette Wescott.
George was a graduate of Sussex High School and later a
graduate of the Canadian Police College in Rockcliffe, Ontario. He was
a member of the Canadian Army from 1944 to 1946 upon conclusion of
WWII. He joined the R.C.M.P. in 1946 and served in western Canada,
Northwest Territories, and Ontario, retiring in 1969. He then accepted
a senior position with the Ports Canada Police where he later became
the Director and retired in 1985. George and Mary have resided in
Rothesay since 1969.
He was a life member of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of
Police, a lifelong member of the R.C.M.P. Veterans Association, a
member of the Royal Canadian Legion, and a member of St.
Paul’s Anglican Church. George had a number of hobbies and
was a general handy man. With Mary he enjoyed travelling by R.V. to
many points in Canada and the U.S.A, as well as travelling to England,
Scotland, and Bermuda. He also enjoyed wood carving, writing, oil
painting, and, in his younger years, motor mechanics. He also was a
volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, constructing homes in Florida.
Mary, George, and family spent many happy times at their summer home
and sailing on the beautiful Belleisle Bay.
Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint
John (634-7424), with visitation on Tuesday, November 28, 2017 from
5-8 PM. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 29, 2017
at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, 4 Church Ave, Rothesay, NB.
Interment will take place at Fernhill cemetery following the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer
Society, Heart & Stroke Foundation, or the Lung Association.
