George Joseph Marchildon – August 12, 1929 – August 8, 2017 (age 87)

It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our father George Joseph Marchildon in the early morning of August 8, 2017.
Dad was born on August 12, 1929 in the small farming community of Laventure, Saskatchewan. He spent his formative years in Saskatchewan. It was there that he met the love of his life Irene Hawkins who he married on November 24, 1954. They had four children in quick succession.
In the spring of 1963 the family followed Irene’s family out to Telkwa BC. Dad eventually got a job as a heavy-duty mechanic with Madigan Equipment the local John Deere dealership who he worked for until the early 1980’s. When the dealership closed in the early 1980’s dad worked for a number of local logging companies as their mechanic and serviceman.
Dad had a strong sense of community service and both he and mom became actively involved with the Telkwa Kinsmen and Kinette Clubs. Their dedication and service was recognized when they were both awarded Lifetime Memberships. In the seventies, eighties and up to when mom passed away in 1990 they both spent countless hours helping with the Annual Telkwa Barbeque in a variety of capacities.
Once us kids moved out on our own mom and dad took up camping and fishing, a passion that they shared with their many friends in the valley.
After dad retired he took up the sport of golf with a passion. His first exposure to the game was in the summer when his son Rudy was 19. Rudy was learning the game and practicing in the family’s front yard in Telkwa when dad came home from work. Dad and mom came out to see what “the boy” was doing. In demonstrating how to swing his driver Rudy inadvertently hit dad in the temple with his follow through needless to say dad dropped like a stone. Years later after taking the game up he had the great pleasure of recording two hole in ones a feat Rudy has yet to match. Dad always set high standards.
Even as a young man, dad loved to bake. Once he retired he began spend more time baking. He especially liked to bake his carrot cakes for birthdays for children and grandchildren and other special occasions. About this time, he also began to make batches of muffins and ginger crinkle cookies. These he shared with family, friends, and various offices in town where he had occasion to do business. To some he became affectionately known as the “Muffin Man” to everyone else he was George.
George was predeceased by his wife Irene (Hawkins) Marchildon, his parents Rudolph and Velma, his brothers Arthur, Donald, and Herman and by his sisters Marj and Elsie. He is survived by his sister Jean Heisler and brothers Ralph and Ray.
George is survived by his son Rudy (Mary Anne) and daughters Carol (Harold) Gyger, Sherrie Fraser and Heather (Don) Sim , nine grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
