In Loving Memory Of
Genevieve Wongstedt
Genevieve Wongstedt, resident of Rocky Mountain House, AB, formerly of Spirit River, passed away on Friday, March 31, 2017, at Rocky Mountain House, at the age of 91 years.
Genevieve was born at Rush Lake, SK, on October 12, 1925, the oldest daughter of Jacob and Lena Backer. She moved with her family to Northmark, AB in 1940.
She completed her grade eight education at the Northmark School and like so many of her generation, went to work at the age of fourteen years to help support her family.
She homesteaded with her husband, Ed Wongstedt, in the Happy Valley District, west of Spirit River, where through much hard work, they built a home for their family.
Genevieve was well known for her cooking abilities. She loved to feed people, to visit and to play cards. Before Ed’s passing in 1986, they were able to spend their retirement time travelling wherever their Chevy van would take them.
Genevieve leaves to mourn her passing and celebrate her life, her children: Allan (Diana), Lloyd, Gordon, Ethel (Wilf) and Joan (Gordon); eleven grandchildren, and fifteen great-grandchildren; her surviving siblings; as well as many friends and people whom she touched during her life journey.
A Funeral Service for the late Genevieve Wongstedt will be held on Friday, April 7, 2017, at 2:00pm at St. John’s Lutheran Church of Northmark.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Canadian Lutheran World Relief to feed the hungry (600, 177 Lombard Ave., Winnipeg, MB, R3B 0W5).
Special thanks are extended to the caring staff at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Rocky Mountain House.
