Frances was born in Windsor, Ontario. After graduating from high school in Oshawa, she served in the intelligence service of the Women’s Royal Canadian Naval Service (Wrens) during World War II and then studied sculpture at the Ontario College of Art. After being mentored by two Toronto sculptors, Frances Loring and Florence Wyle, she furthered her studies on two scholarships: first, at the Art Students League of New York and second, at L’Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris She returned to Canada in 1957 and began working in Tom Thomson′s former studio (“The Shack”). After several moves, she settled in Cobourg in1998, where she remained for the rest of her life.
Frances was an astonishingly prolific sculptor; her work can be found in galleries and private homes across Canada. Some of her most noted sculptures are Discovery of the Hands, which was commissioned by what is now Fanshawe College and is on display there, Woman, commissioned 50 years ago by and still on display at Women’s College Hospital in Toronto, and The Jenny, which the Wrens commissioned to commemorate their war service and is at the Public Library of Cambridge, Ontario. She received the Cobourg Civic Award for Arts in 2011 and in 2016, she was honoured with the OMNI Health Care Lifetime Achievement Award.
Frances will be fondly remembered for her deep and abiding respect for nature, her love of cats and dogs, her wonderful singing voice, her enjoyment of classical music, and her kindness and generosity to her many, many relatives and friends.
