Florence Nelsen – 2017

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing on Saturday, March 25th, 2017 of Florence Nelsen, beloved wife for 65 years of Leonard Nelsen. Florence leaves to cherish her memory three daughters, Doris Barnes, Elaine (Doug) Turner, and Renee (Maurice) Trottier; nine grandchildren: Aurora (Bobby), Rhett (Lynda), Sonja (Ryan), Brittney (Ryan), Gisele (Dave), Celeste (Graham), Claire (Anthony), Dominic, and Stefan; and nine great grandchildren; her sister, Gladys Quast; her brother, Elmer (Gladys) Mayer; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Florence was predeceased by her son, Eugene; a son-in-law, Hank; a grandson-in-law, Steve; brother, Harvey (Marje); and brother-in-law, Tom.
Florence was born in Medicine Hat and raised in the Pashley area. For a short time she was employed with the Medicine Hat General Hospital. She met Leonard and they were married in December 1951. Together they made their home on the farm North of Irvine until 1997, at which time they moved to Medicine Hat.
Throughout the years, Florence was actively involved in her community; the Irvine Peace United Church, Irvine Complex, 20 Mile Post Days, the Clearwater Hall, and provided support to the Irvine Chinook Club.
For several years, Florence and Leonard enjoyed being part of the Good Sam RV Club.
Florence enjoyed music, dancing, gardening, painting, and nature.
A highlight of Florence’s life was taking several rural extension courses. She loved learning new skills. Since moving to Medicine Hat, Florence joined an art group and learned to paint. Her many beautiful works decorate her children’s and grandchildren’s homes. Florence developed a passion for reading and became an avid reader over the past several years.
