Obituary for Eugene William “Bill” McCarthy
Passed away peacefully at the Perley Rideau Veterans’ Health Centre, Ottawa. He will be missed by his devoted wife of 70 years, Dorothy, children Douglas, Deborah and Diana (Andrew Hodgson), grandchildren Laura (Kevin Renaud) and Julia (Chris Prouse) and great grandchildren, Noah and Kate. Brother of Ivy and half-sister Esther. Predeceased by father, Eugene McCarthy, mother, Florence (Martin) and siblings Kathleen and Hugh.
Bill was born in Luton, England and came to Canada as a young boy with his recently widowed mother and three younger siblings. As the eldest child he took on much of the burden of supporting the family during the depression. He continued this role as a young man when he joined the service.
Bill was a lover of music, ballroom dancing, an avid photographer, and a natural-born salesperson, who enjoyed the outdoors and most of all, liked to soak up the sunshine. A talented artist, he worked at The Citizen for most of his working years, and did freelance art work. He was Past Master at Rideau Masonic Lodge.
The family is thankful to all the caring staff of The Perley Rideau whose kindness and hard work were very much appreciated. Special thanks to caregiver Gazetta Johnson, as well as to Gertrude Letourneau who enriched Bill’s life with her music sessions during his last years.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair and McGarry, 315 McLeod Street (at O’Connor), Ottawa on Thursday, November 9th at 11 a.m., followed by a reception.
