Ethel Marie (Steele) MacDougall – 2017

Ethel Marie MacDougall
Sydney Mines
Ethel Marie completed her earthly journey peacefully at home on Friday, May 19, 2017, surrounded with the love and prayers of her loving husband of 49 years, Ronald MacDougall, her sons Allan MacDougall (Carmel Bragg), and Stephen (Jennifer) MacDougall, her daughter Jane (Ian) MacDonald, and her two precious granddaughters Amelia and Kenna. She also leaves behind to mourn her sisters Geraldine (Ben) Kuzmicz), Regina, Sask., Jeanne Henschel, Halifax, Patricia (Barry) Johnston, Charlottetown, and Lorna A. Steele, Halifax.
Born in North Sydney on December 18, 1940, Ethel Marie was the daughter of the late Lawrence A. and Dinah Steele. She was a member of Holy Family Parish, Sydney Mines. She was a beloved and devoted wife and mother.
Ethel Marie grew up in North Sydney, Cape Breton, where she attended St. Joseph’s School. She continued her education at Mount Saint Vincent College, obtaining a BSc in Home Economics and Bed. She also held a Grade Eight Piano Designation from the Royal Conservatory of Music. Ethel was employed with the Cape Breton Victoria Regional School Board until her retirement in 2001. Her teaching career started at St. John XXIII High School, Dorval Quebec, before returning to North Sydney to work at Thompson High, and retiring from Memorial High School. Ethel was known for her rapport and her warmth with students.
Ethel was a committed mother to her family, always loving, supporting and caring. She will always be remembered for her “presentation and creativity” at home and at work.
At this time our family would like to express our deep appreciation to the Palliative Care, VON nurses, and homecare staff who made Ethel’s days as peaceful and comfortable as possible.
Visitation for Ethel MacDougall will be held on Sunday, May 20, 2017, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines. A celebration of her life will take place Monday at 10:00 a.m. in Holy Family Church, Sydney Mines, with Fr. Angus MacDougall officiating.
