ESTHER GOSSELIN – 1915-2017

ESTHER GOSSELIN
1915-2017
Esther Gosselin, 102, of
Moncton, left us peacefully for heaven in the morning of May 16, 2017
at Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont UHC. in the presence of
family.
Born on April 2, 1915 in McLean Settlement, Kent
County, NB, she was the youngest child of
Fidèle and Philomène (Cormier) Girouard and had
5 sisters: Alice, Rosée, Délia, Marie-Blanche,
Marie-Anne and 8 brothers: Elie, Arthur, Nap, Zoel, Gilbert,
Mélème, Antoine,
David.
As a young girl, she grew
up on the family farm with no car, electric, phone, plumbing or TV and
was busy milking cows, making butter, getting berries, picking apples,
cooking, cleaning, helping neighbours and putting wood in the
stove.
She learned well in a one room school and always had
a nice handwriting. She graduated
8th grade in
1928.
In the early 1930’s she worked at a small store on
Botsford near Moncton High and met Louis who operated a grocery and
meat store at 24 Mountain (site of Moncton
Museum). They married at the
Cathédrale on February 8,
1937.
In 1942, the family moved on Elmwood to start a
farm. Although busy with 4 children,
she helped in the 1950’s at their store “Lewisville Meat
Market” on Mill Rd., their “Moonlight
Lake” skating rink, cooking for hired hands and
housework.
In the mid 1960’s she
started collecting and later selling antiques at the barn until the
late 1980’s.
In retirement, Esther and
Louis enjoyed visits from family and friends, flea markets, flowers,
knitting and
was an excellent
housekeeper in her home until 90.
She was married for 71 years until 2008 when Louis
passed and spent her last 10 years at “Residence
Adventure” where she was well treated.
That
made her a 74 year resident of Elmwood
Dr.
All through her life, Esther was nice and friendly,
enjoyed people and always had a lunch ready for anyone stopping
by. Her secret to a long life was
no drinking, no smoking, eating well, good sleep and no pills until
80.
She was a member of the
Saint Lawrence O’Toole Catholic Church and a strong believer in God,
always attended Sunday mass.
She is survived by 2
daughters: Bertha (Alfred) Williams and Claudette (Joseph) Baiani, two
sons: Louis Jr. and Clarence “Goose” Gosselin, 9
grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and 2 great great grand daughters
making it 5 generations.
She will be greatly
missed by all family and friends and forever remembered for her
kindness, honesty, great advice and love of the
family.
A funeral service to
celebrate and honor Esther’s life will be held at Saint-Lawrence
O’toole Church in Irishtown on Tuesday May 23, 2017 at 3pm, followed
by a reception and lunch, everyone
welcome.
If so desired,
donations may be made to the Dr. Georges-L. Dumont Hospital where they
took good care of her for the last 6 months or to the donor’s
choice.
