Elizabeth Estelle Begg
On the morning of December 19, 2016, Elizabeth Estelle Begg (nee Taylor), quietly and peacefully left this lovely earth we all share, into knowing the light and love of God in heaven. Those of us still living, who loved her so much, hope that by God’s heavenly grace, we will all be together again someday.
Estelle was predeceased by the love of her life, husband John in 2005 and beloved daughter Betty in 2015, as well as her parents John and Stella Taylor, brothers Russell, Lawrence and wife Gwen, Leverne and wife Nancy, and Lyle. Also, sister Lylene McKenzie and husband Ross, and sister Evelyn Fallis, and husband Wesley, and dear parents-in-law, Sarah and Reuben Begg and sister-in-law Beatrice, and husband John Still and brother-in-law Gerald Bracken. She leaves to grieve her passing, son Robert and partner Gordon from Edmonton, daughter Judith, and daughter Sharon and husband Dan, and grandson’s Tim and Neil of Winnipeg. Also, son-in-law Walter Ivaniski, granddaughter Marilyn, and great grandson Skye of Port Alberni, BC and grandson Grant and wife Carla of Saskatoon, SK. As well, sister Lea Codrington and son Craig of New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Also, sister-in -law Evelyn Bracken of Selkirk. And, as well, numerous nieces and nephews and other dear family and friends.
Mom was born in Rossburn, Manitoba but grew up in Pine Falls, Manitoba. She was an attractive, athletic, and adventurous child and young lady, always kind, considerate, and loving to all. When her mother Stella died in her forties, the young Estelle and sister Lea became stalwarts in the family home.
In her early twenties, Estelle met a handsome young man, John Robert Begg, through mutual friends in Old England, Manitoba a community on the highway just south of Selkirk where John lived all his life. They fell madly, passionately in love and married on October 9, 1948. In the years following their four children were born, son Robert first, followed by daughters, Betty, Judith, and the youngest, Sharon. It was a very happy home and the family thrived in an environment of mutual love and respect.
John and Estelle were a very sociable couple and welcomed many friends and family alike into their home for parties and family gatherings. Estelle was always a very hard worker, she was cleaning houses in Pine Falls at nine years old. Her loving, welcoming spirit made our home a place of refuge and good times. There were, as previously mentioned, parties with music and dancing, and oh, the old time fiddle and accompanying piano were a joy. Estelle and John were life members of the A.N.A.F. Club in Selkirk where Mom spent a lot of time over the years and served as President for some years of the Women’s Auxiliary. They were also associated with the Selkirk Legion. Mom worked for many years on the executive committee as the membership coordinator for the Over 60 Club. Dad spent most of his working life at Carling-O’Keefe Brewery, now Molson’s, in Winnipeg but they never left Old England. They enjoyed the many social events in Winnipeg and the many dear friends they made through Dad’s association with Carlings.
Mom and Dad loved to travel, many bus trips, sometimes to gamble, road trips, and flying, usually to BC.
Mom was passionate about baseball and curling. John had been a baseball player in his younger years and they both loved to watch the games on TV in season. Estelle and John were avid curlers playing many games and participated in many bonspiels, together or separately, over many years. They took up golf and bowling later in life and joined the Selkirk Golf and Country Club.
Mom never worked outside our home until we were all in school. Over the years, she worked at Eaton’s Catalogue at Christmas, at the Bus Depot lunch counter in Selkirk, and finally, the Southview Bakery.
After John passed in 2005, Estelle lived on in the family home in Old England for a few years but eventually sold and moved into a condo in Selkirk. In time, she realized that she could not continue living on her own and not quite a year ago, moved into the Betel Personal Care Home in Selkirk. Mom was content with this decision, realizing, that it was time. Until her recent hospitalization, Mom was comfortable and her mind was still sharp. She loved visitors, and many came to call and wish her well. She looked forward to Sharon and Judith’s weekly Sunday visits and Robert’s tri-annual visits from Edmonton.
Our dear mother Estelle, was for us, the best mother in the world. She loved us unconditionally and raised us to be respectful, considerate always, to love, and to make wise choices. She will live in our hearts and thoughts forever.
She loved our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ but was not a regular church goer at our St. Clements Church, Dad’s family church was a big part of our life growing up. She lived her life by God’s teaching and example and was loved by all who knew her. She greatly appreciated Archdeacon Mawejje’s visits to home and hospital recently, and as well, his visits to give them communion at home during Dad’s final year and then with Mom after Dad’s passing. This was a blessing she never forgot.
This past year, she was content to sit in her big comfortable recliner and watch her baseball on TV during season, her game shows, and until recently, curling. Her 91 plus glorious years were a blessing to her and to all of us who loved her. Mom could be stubborn about change or new ideas but would in time, realize that life never really remains the same. She embraced life and now in death, is embrace by God. Rest in peace dear heart, surrounded by love and eternal light, until we meet again.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, December 23 at 11:00 A.M. in Gilbart Funeral Chapel in Selkirk, followed by lunch in the Gilbart Reception Center.
If anyone wishes, donations may be made in Estelle’s memory to our St. Clements Anglican Church on the River Road just before Selkirk.
