Kay was born on November 7, 1925 at Success, SK. She started school at the Wheat Belt S.D. and then completed the remainder of her schooling at the Vendetta S.D. Kay’s first job was working for Kit and Dave Wootherspoon at Success which paid $15.00 per month that is where she learned to harness a team of horses and drive Dave Jr. to school. She worked for many people and various other places including the Stutsmans and Zellers in the Pennant District, Bill Brunyee at their ranch at the Saskatchewan Landing, Vern & Ellen Lovell of Lacedena, Otto Farrup and for the White Bear Telephone office where she worked as a telephone operator. Kay’s next job was working at the Success telephone office where she fell in love with the boss’s son-Donald Shumaker. Kay and Donald were married on November 15, 1945 at the United Church Manse in Swift Current followed by a reception at the old “Picadilly Café”. They raised 8 children-all of who were her most precious beings in the world. After working for a few years at Knights ranch’, then building a home in Swift Current, the family moved to Stewart Valley where she resided for 40 years until retiring and moving back to Swift Current in the fall of 1999. Our Mother was gifted in many ways and she had many talents that we as a family admired in her. She was interested in ceramics, oil painting, quilting, sewing, knitting, crocheting, and gardening, just to name a few. She was naturally talented and enjoyed playing many musical instruments, such as the piano, electric organ, accordion, guitar, mouth organ, banjo, and violin all of which she taught herself to play. Mom and Dad invested a lot of quality time together, whether it was home renovations, fishing at Knight’s ranch, harvesting minnows or just spending time driving the countryside looking at crops and visiting friends and family. A grave side family service will be held at a later date in 2018. Donations can be made to “The Meadows” or a Charity of your choice in lieu of flowers. Warren’s Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
