Emilea Millie Barber – 2016

EMILEA (MILLIE) Barber (nee Banack)
OCTOBER 20, 1913 – December 4, 2016
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Millie Barber announces her passing from complications following a fall. Millie was born at Neudorf, SK, the third of six children. Millie moved with her family to Lipton, SK in 1918 where she resided until May of 2002 when she moved to Fort Qu’Appelle. She married John (Grip) Barber in 1932 and had four children. Millie and John enjoyed playing badminton, tennis, cribbage and bridge. She also enjoyed and excelled at curling. Millie filled her time with many pursuits but was well known for her knitting and crocheting. As with everything Millie did, her generosity was exceptional. In her later years, she knitted and donated hundreds of toques for NICU units at the Regina General Hospital, hundreds of pairs of mittens for children in need and dolls sent to medical clinics for children in Africa. Millie was an avid gardener and her yard was a flourish of colour. She took great pride in the variety of lilies she grew and many of those lilies live on in gardens of family and friends. A consummate mother and homemaker, Millie was an excellent cook and a gracious host; some of her specialties were perogies, cabbage rolls and fresh baked bread. Her Lipton home with John was always open to family and friends and they gladly accepted many children in need of a home. After the death of John, Millie was in her late 60’s and, not wanting to miss out on her bridge games or shopping at the Fort, she got her driver’s license and drove herself and her friends. Millie was happiest with a pair of knitting needles or a deck of cards in her hands. She developed and cherished many lasting friendships and was loved by many. Millie will always be remembered for her generosity, her enduring faith, her warm and friendly manner, her love of family and her skilfulness as a bridge player. Millie was predeceased by her parents, Louie and Emilie Banack; husband John (Grip) Barber; siblings Joe (Myrtle) Banick, Alma (Joe) Young, Fritz (Thea, Adeline) Bonick, Martha (Bob Renas, Laurie) Johnson, Bill (Freida) Bonick; children Lennard and Harold; son-in-law Eric Fiissel. Millie is lovingly remembered by children Stan (Donna) Barber and Marlene Fiissel; daughter-in-law Norma Barber; grandchildren Lori Fiissel (Tom Allardyce), Wendi (Errol) Stewart, Cathy Barber (Mike Mitsch), Dian (Robin) Fournier, John Barber (Mary Pat Hinton), Jeff Barber (Kindle Parsons), and Jodi (Lowell) Holliday; great-grandchildren Patrick and Grahame Hinton-Barber, Hunter and Buckley Stewart, Emilie and Ella Fournier, and Aneka Barber; and several nieces and nephews. A special thanks to the ladies from Home Care who went above and beyond to help Millie retain her independence. Thank you to the dedicated and compassionate care provided by the staff at All Nations Healing Hospital. A Celebration of Millie’s Life will be held at Our Saviour Lutheran Church, 245 Pasqua Ave N., Fort Qu’Appelle, SK, on Saturday, December 10, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. Flowers gratefully declined. Friends so wishing may make donations in memory of Millie to Our Saviour Lutheran Church or a charity of your choice.
