Elsie Mary Simpson Hay
July 3, 1924 – March 2, 2017
The family sadly announces the passing of Elsie on Thursday March 2nd at Bethania Nursing Home.
She was predeceased by her father James & mother Barbara Hay (Cowie), her brothers James (in infancy), Bill Hay, sister inlaw Gwen, her sister Barbara Thomas, brother inlaw Bob Thomas, Brother inlaw Keith Stammers, and nephew Kenneth Stammers.
She leaves to mourn her passing sister Iris Stammers and brother Les Hay along with 13 nieces and nephews.
Elsie was the born in the family home in Transcona. She attended Central school and graduated from Transcona Collegiate. She then continued her education by taking a Stenographers course at Success Business College.
Her first employer was Dominion Rubber Company where she worked for several years. She then transitioned to A.E. Ames Investments. Her superior work ethic earned her the opportunity to take investment courses. The 1st year she was awarded the Gold Medal for the highest mark in Canada, the 2nd course she received the Silver Medal. She was then promoted and became the first Stock Broker/Financial Advisor in the City of Winnipeg.
During her youth Elsie excelled at any sport she took up, a natural athelete. In 1938 she won the Mayor George Olive Trophy for the best athlete in Transcona Central School male or femaie. She continued to golf and curl well into her later years.
Our father purchased a cottage in Ottermere, Ontario in 1947 and this became Elsie’s home away from home. She loved the lake and went swimming daily. She later had her own cottage built adjacent to the homestead and enjoyed it well into her eighties.
Elsie was an avid traveller. Her favorite excursion was an ocean voyage to the United Kingdom to visit relatives in Scotland. Her other travels took her to Hawaii, Portugal, Jamaica and all through the US and Canada.
The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff at Bethania for the excellent care and attention received during the years she resided there.
There will be no formal service. Cremation has already taken place and inurnment will take place at a later date with family attending.
Flowers are gratefully declined. Elsie loved her Cairn Terriers so anyone wishing to make a donation in Elsie’s memory may send to the Winnipeg Humane Society or to a charity of your choice.
Nos plus sincères sympathies à la famille et aux amis de Elsie
