Elmer McCarty – 2017

MCCARTY: Elmer Howard of Simmie, SK passed away peacefully on July 10, 2017 at the age of 92 in the Shaunavon Hospital – Long Term Care. The fourth of eight children, he was born on June 15, 1925 to Angus and Olive McCarty on the family farm (located N.W. 20-11-16 W of 3). He attended Cedar View School in his youth, and worked for various farmers and threshing crews. As a young man, he headed west for work at a pulp and paper mill in B.C., worked on a bridge crew in Pincher Creek, a train yard in Medicine Hat, and with Evert Bolton’s Custom Combining which took him to various places in Canada and the United States. Elmer returned to Simmie, buying the Thring’s land and started farming. He married Loreta Blinco from Shaunavon on April 20, 1960. They enjoyed raising their four children on the farm and were happy to share fond memories with all five grandchildren. He was excited on the arrival of his great granddaughter Alex Harvey in 2016. In retirement, dad and mom took bus trips, gambling with his siblings and going to various casinos, where he would even win now and then. He enjoyed visiting, mail day in Simmie, a cold one (or two), a good joke, and laughing/giggling which you could pick out of a crowd anywhere. Dad loved his flowers, always buying different kinds to plant in the flowerbeds. I’m sure between all the siblings they had every color of geranium available. Along with his flowers, Dad enjoyed watching the birds come back, moose wandering through the yard, and his evergreen trees. On August 22, 2014 he moved to Shaunavon Long Term Care Centre, which he made the best of a bad situation, and until the end, he always found a reason to laugh. Dad thought a lot of his caregivers, always trying to get his two bits worth in. He enjoyed when it was handed back to him; it made his time there much more amusing. Elmer is survived by his wife Loreta; his kids Twyla (Neil) Spetz, Dwight, Keith (Kathy), and Delmer; grandchildren Jeff Spetz, Michelle (James) Harvey, Kailey McCarty, Danny McCarty, and Jacey McCarty; great granddaughter Alex Harvey; siblings Wilma Kruse and Albert McCarty; siblings-in-law Floyd Blinco, Leila Stevenson, and Marg Carpenter along with their children. He was predeceased by his parents Angus and Olive McCarty; brothers Clifford (Winnie) McCarty and Murray (Mattie) McCarty; sisters Verna (Lionel) Kruse, Hazel (Lawrence) Larsen, and Else (Wes) Bolton; and in-laws Russel Stephenson, Gordon Krause, Don Carpenter, and Jim Stevenson. The family would like to extend its thanks for the compassionate care he received from all the staff in the Long Term Care; Reverend Annette Taylor, First United Church and the U.C.W. Ladies for the service and lunch; Warren’ Funeral Home; as well as all those who have sent flowers, food, prayers, and support during this difficult time. The funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 18, 2017 from First United Church with Reverend Annette Taylor officiating. The organist was Joan Williamson, and the pallbearers were Lonnie Bolton, Jeff Spetz, Michelle Spetz, Kaily McCarty, Danny McCarty, and Jacey McCarty. The interment service took place in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Donations in Elmer’s memory may be made to the Shaunavon Hospital Auxiliary Long Term Care P.O. Box 789 Shaunavon, SK S0N 2M0. Warren’s Funeral Home were entrusted with the arrangements.
