Ella Loraine Southoff – 2016

SOUTHOFF
Ella Loraine Southoff has gone to join her best friend and husband of 55 years, Herbert. She passed peacefully in the early hours of December 15, 2016 with family at her side at the Rockview Hospital, Calgary. She was born on her family’s homestead farm near Rimbey, the youngest of 12 children on December 28, 1925. Inquisitive and curious, Ella graduated from Concordia College during World War II with four female friends. They were the first women to graduate in 30 years, and were recently honoured with a ceremony at the University. Ella went on to teach in one-room schoolhouses near Taber and Lower Beaverlodge. During this time, she met Herbert, and they were soon married. After her marriage, Ella taught kindergarten in Calgary, and also worked at the General Hospital as a unit clerk. Later in life, still curious, Ella learned how to use a computer, and took up yoga and coloured-pencil drawing. She was an advocate for literacy, and a life-long avid reader.
Ella was predeceased by all 11 of her siblings, and leaves behind her three sons Robert, Clark and Herb, her daughter-in-law Toni, and her sister-in law Mary Hildebrandt, as well as her extended family and many nieces and nephews. Special thanks to Dr. Georgina Valdecanas and the staff of Unit 72 at the Rockyview Hospital for their compassionate care.
Funeral service will be held on Wednesday December 28, 2016 at 11:00 am at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Olds with Pastor John Lentz. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes maybe made directly to the Rockyview Hospital or the charity of the choice. Heartland Funeral Services Ltd., Olds entrusted with arrangements. 403-507-8610 www.heartlandfuneralservices.com
