CALF ROBE, Edward Russell – Sinipohkomi (Otter Howling) March 2, 1938 – April 22, 2017
Ed Calf Robe Sr, beloved husband of Marie Calf Robe, of Siksika Nation passed away at Strathmore Hospital on April 22, 2017 surrounded by his loved ones after a courageous battle with cancer. Ed leaves behind his wife of 60 years Marie, children; Delbert (Delia), Roberta, Noran (Florene), Eddy (Stephanie), Pamela (Jason) and grand children Shawn (Germain) and Reno (John) whom he raised, 18 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren and surviving sibling: Sharon; as well as many family and friends. The Patriarch of his family, Ed was a proud family man who lived a long and fulfilling life dedicated to his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Born at the Siksika Nation Hospital in 1938, Ed attended Crowfoot Residential School, SAIT Polytechnic and Olds College where he specialized in Agriculture. He was a rancher for much of his life until he retired and a strong advocate for his community. He served the Siksika Nation as a councillor with Siksika Chief & Council and in his later years as an elder/advisor for Siksika Land Claims. He also worked for Siksika Family Services, Tribal Ranch, Housing, and Finance and sat on a number of boards including Siksika Resource Development Corporation, Blackfoot Crossing Historical Park, Hidden Valley Golf Resort and Siksika Nation Agriculture. Ed was extremely proud of his Siksika culture and was very active in sharing it on the world stage as a dancer and as a Calgary Stampede Tipi Holder, a role he held for thirty five years. He was recognized as a respected elder in his community who was often invited to his experiences and wisdom with the Blackfoot Confederacy and Treaty 7 Nations. He was an avid hand game player and lover of all sports both as a competitor and a fan. He spent a lot of time in the stands cheering on his family at various events including hockey games and at the chuckwagons. Well known for his love of Horse Racing, Ed worked his way from a groomer to a trainer and owner who racked up an impressive record of over two hundred wins during his fifty year career in the sport of kings. In addition to his numerous trips to the winners circle, Ed was inducted into the Rocky Mountain Turf Club Wall of Fame at Whoop Up Downs in 2014. His family takes great comfort in knowing that he was reunited with his favourite horse Charlie O where he continues his love of racing in the Happy Hunting Grounds. Ed is predeceased by his parents Ben and Myrtle Calf Robe, his daughter Janice and his siblings; Paul, Kathleen, Donna, Wilfred, George, Larry and Bruce. The family would like to thank friends and family who have supported them during this difficult time including care giver Maria Calf Robe, Siksika Home Care and Strathmore Hospital staff.
