Obituary for Edward Blake (Blake)
With great sadness, the family of Mansell (Ed) Blake, announce his death on December 13, 2017 at his home, the St. Lawrence Lodge. Mansell, as he was known by his family, will be deeply missed by his beloved wife of 73 years, Helen, nee Parslow, his children, Donna (Ian) and Robert (Gail), his grandson Mark (Mary) and his brother Allan. His cherished grandson, Timothy Edward Winter, predeceased Mansell in 2013. In addition he was uncle to several Blake and Parslow nieces and nephews.
Mansell was born and raised in Jellyby, a small farming hamlet near Brockville. At the age of 15 he joined an army unit for young boys and given the rank of Boy Soldier! He proudly spent 27 years in the Canadian Armed Forces, travelling far and wide before retiring with the rank of Captain in the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps. After moving to Toronto he then spent 20 years with the Ontario Ministry of Transportation where he played a major role in driver education and became known as “Driver Ed”.
Mansell and Helen happily moved back home upon retirement to Brockville in 1988. He became very active in the community serving as a volunteer with the Brockville Shepherds Welcome Centre, warden at St Paul’s Anglican Church, member of Brockville Country Club and Brockville Probus. When Helen’s health declined, he was a devoted caregiver for many years.
The Blake family extends their sincere gratitude and appreciation to the staff on the Spruce Wing of the St Lawrence Lodge for their compassionate care and empathetic support during the last year and in particular during Mansell’s final days.
Visitation at St Paul’s Anglican Church, 12 Pine St., Brockville will take place at 11 am on Saturday, December 16, 2017 followed by the funeral service at 12 pm. There will be a reception in the church hall immediately after the funeral service. Interment will be at Oakland Cemetery later that afternoon.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Edward Mansell Blake may be made, with much appreciation, to St Paul’s Anglican Church, St. Lawrence Lodge Foundation or to a charity of your choice.
