Edna Mae Neill – 2016

Obituary for Edna Neill
Edna Mae (Somers) Neill
September 16, 1930 – December 5, 2016
Mae passed away at the Red River Valley Lodge in Morris Manitoba in the morning of December 5, 2016 with her family by her side. Mae Neill was born in Strathclair, Manitoba to Alfred Somers and Edna (Westaway) Somers and was one of six children. Mae graduated from Strathclair High School then started work as a telephone operator eventually ending up in Dauphin, MB where she met Harold. They were married on October 20, 1951 at Strathclair and then moved to Winnipeg where Harold began his life long career with the CNR. It wasn’t long before the children started to arrive, first Bruce, then Lynda, Kathy, Doug and Ken. Certainly raising five children was a full-time job but Mae also wanted to work outside the home where she shared her creative talents as a sewing instructor and then a sales clerk in a sewing machine store. Mae then worked for 15 years as a para-professional in Wayoata and Westview Elementary Schools helping children with reading difficulties. Both Mae and Harold were active volunteers and involved in the activities of their children including the Transcona Pipe Band, community clubs and camping. Mae was one to take on new challenges and enjoyed working on home renovation projects with Harold with pencil and hammer in hand. She often used her sewing talents whether it was keeping the kids in new cloths or helping a hockey team with equipment modifications or creating much of the first uniforms for the pipeband. She gave freely of her time and talents and made many friends along the way. Mae was an avid sports fan starting with watching Ken or the grandkids play hockey but especially her Winnipeg Jets and Toronto Blue Jays. Mae’s health significantly declined following Harold’s passing in 2008 resulting in her move in 2013 from the condo at Park City Meadows to Red River Valley Lodge in Morris MB. Although her body failed her, her mind was sharp and her attitude positive and resilient to the end. Mae is predeceased by her husband Harold and brothers Clifford and Lawrence. Mae is survived by her children Bruce Neill (Laura Poppy), Lynda Parisian (Shaun), Katherine Neill (Dennis Derksen), Douglas Neill (Lorrie), Kenneth Neill (Carey Duncan) and grandchildren Richard Neill (Heather), Erin Lamb (Doug), Riley Chambers (Julie), Travis Chambers (Stephanie), Kerri Leeson (Corey), Craig Parisian (Becky), Jennifer Driedger (Rob), Trevor Kinsey (Kendall), Cory Neill (Ashley), Alyssa Neill (Derek), Jesi Neill and Cody Neill as well as 14 great grandchildren Rylee, Sydnee, Taylor, Tye, Tia, Cayden, Cali, Carter, Ally, Brooklyn, Kaitlyn (Damian), Reese, Mason, Heath and one great great grandchild Aubry. The Family would like to thank Dr. Fraser and the Morris Hospital. A very special thank you to the wonderful staff at the Red River Valley Lodge for their excellent care, compassion and support over the last three years. Momma Mae loved you all. A funeral in celebration of Mae’s life will be held on Monday December 12, 2016 at 11:00 am at Wheeler Funeral Home 1800 Day Street, Winnipeg, MB. In lieu of flowers, we ask you to consider a donation to a charity of your choice.
