SIFTON, Doris Virginia (nee Davidson)
April 13, 1928 – July 11, 2017
Doris Sifton, aged 89 years, passed away suddenly in Cranbrook, BC while vacationing there at Tie Lake. She was born on the family farm near McCord, Saskatchewan, the fifth of ten children and had an idyllic childhood. She lived in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan from 1949 – 1968, where she worked as a waitress in the Harward Hotel and the Skyline Nightclub. Doris married Les Taylor in 1949 and they had two children, Ron and Judy. In 1967, Doris remarried to Dale Sifton, the love of her life. They moved to Calgary in 1968 and Doris worked in a medical lab for a year and then at Gulf Oil for 9 years. Following her retirement, they wintered in Yuma, Arizona and holidayed at Tie Lake, camping in the orchard and visiting her son’s beautiful ranch in southern Alberta. She loved to dance, camp, bake and do crafts – never tiring of working at something new. Her life centered on her family and friends, with Christmas being her favorite time of year. Doris loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, as they were the highlight of her life. She was always the first to help others, tell a funny story or a slightly inappropriate joke and loved to bring her famous homemade chocolate cake, bread, buns, cinnamon buns and apple pies to special family dinners and holidays.
Doris will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Dale (of 50 years); her son, Ron (Karen); grandsons, Shaun (Michelle), Adam (Emily), Nathan (Natalie) and Tyler; and her very dear great grandchildren, Curtis and Violet; her brother, Don (Martha); sisters, Jean, Belle and Myrtle, several nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends, here and in the United States; also, her daughter, Judy (Jim) and children Jason, Jaclyn and Jessica of the US. She was predeceased by father, Roland (1984); mother, Emma (1981); 2 brothers, Glen (1945) and Jack (1966); and 3 sisters, Virginia (1929), Lorraine (1930), and Ruth (1992).
Doris always had a smile, instead of a frown, always a hand, when one was down, always true, thoughtful and kind, what wonderful memories she left behind.
Her final words of wisdom for us are “Don’t be afraid to die when it’s your time, I’ll see you all in that Big Campground in the Sky.”
A Celebration of Doris’ Life will be held at the Calgary Winter Club, 4611 – 14 Street NW, Calgary, AB on Thursday, July 20, 2017 at 12:00 Noon. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made in Doris’ memory to the Children’s Hospital, 2888 Shaganappi Trail NW, Calgary, AB, T3B 6A8.
