Doris Marie Hawk (Nanton) - October 25

Doris Marie Hawk (Nanton) – October 25, 1930 – April 25, 2017

Doris Marie (Schram) Hawk passed away at the Silver Willow Lodge, Nanton, on April 25, 2017 at the age of 86 years. Doris was born October 25, 1930 in the Claresholm Hospital, the middle child of Herbert and Evelyn Schram. She married Ken Hawk of Parkland, AB. on June 28, 1952 and together raised two children, Hugh and Dianne. Doris had many talents and music was a mainstay in their household growing up, with her dad playing the violin, her mother the piano, and brother Dean and her playing… guitar. Doris had a beautiful voice and won numerous talent contests. She had four songs copy written and recorded with three of her original compositions receiving air time. She was also an artist, writer and poet. Her paintings of the Starline and Parkland Schools were enjoyed by many. She contributed her time, art work and writings to the local history books. Doris was a cub leader (Baloo), taught Sunday School, was a member of the UCW and coached numerous softball teams. She spent countless hours helping the Stavely-Parkland 4-H club with plays, decoration and projects. She wrote plays and performed for the Parkland Players. She volunteered at A.B. Daley School, helping classes with art projects and individual students with reading. Doris had been a certified St. John First Aid member since the 1940’s and decided to become an instructor in the 1980’s. She proved she had what it took and was appointed the rural representative for Southern Alberta. She traveled many miles teaching courses to industries, local ranches and community members. She was a regular at the Nanton Nite Rodeos, volunteering her time to administer First Aid to the participants. All her hard work was acknowledged when she was nominated for and won the local Priority Council Award. This led to further appreciation as she was recognized and presented with “A Serving Sister Award” for the Order of Canada by Governor General Madame Suave in Ottawa in October, 1986. Doris also served as a board member for the Livingstone Range School Board in the 1990’s. Through all of her activities she never neglected her duties as a proud, hardworking, farm wife. She was an excellent cook and could drive grain truck with the best of them. She was predeceased by her parents Herbert (1973) and Evelyn (1990) Schram, husband Ken Hawk (2010), an older brother Dean Schram (2012), brothers and sisters-in-law, Beryl (1995) and Ellis (1996) Oviatt, Betty (2001) and Ed (2009) Kramer, Norman Hawk (1998), Don Hawk (2009) and her grandson Greg Dawson 2001). Doris is survived by her son Hugh Hawk of Calgary, daughter Dianne (Sandy) Comstock of Nanton, granddaughters: Jennifer (Jay) Hannigan and son Tighe of Bayswater, New Brunswick, Lynn Dawson of Victoria, BC, grandson Chris Hawk of Calgary, step grandsons: Jeremy (Davina) Comstock and children Sawyer and Finlay of Stavely, Noel Comstock of Calgary and Tanner Comstock of Calgary, a younger brother Don (Ellen) Schram of Hinton, sister-in-law Shirley Hawk of Nanton as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at Nanton-Parkland United Church, Nanton, on Monday, May 15, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. Rev. Susan Wilkinson-Matticks officiating. If desired in memory of Doris, memorial donations may be made to the Greg Dawson Memorial Scholarship Fund, Box 124, Nanton, AB., T0L 1R0, or to the Mosquito Creek Foundation, Box 40, Nanton, AB.
