Doris EileenSanderson – 2017

Obituary for Doris Sanderson
After a short illness, Doris passed quietly at Southlake Village, Newmarket, on June 27th, 2017, in her 88th year. Born in Barrie and raised near Oakville, in Lambton Mills and in Humber Bay, Mom moved to Richmond Hill at age 12 and spent virtually the rest of her life in “the Hill”.
The daughter of Charles Percy Bowyer and Florence May Degeer, Mom is survived by her husband of almost 64 years, Lloyd Sanderson, sons Neil (Judee Vidal) of Auckland, New Zealand, Ron (Linda) of Oakville, and daughter Marilyn (Livio Persi) of Newmarket, and by her four grandsons, Steven, Trevor, Joshua and Jacob Persi. Also survived by sisters Marion (late Ken) Gallagher, of Ottawa, and Crystal (Doug) Winger, of Sutton, and by a large extended family. Mom was predeceased by her parents and her sister Grace (late Shirl) Gurney.
In the late 1940s, Mom became the teacher in a one-room rural school in Edgar, Ontario. Barely older than her 45 pupils, she made lasting friendships with some of her students before returning to Richmond Hill two years later.
Mom’s lifelong focus was her family, her church and the broader community, both locally and globally. She tried to live her faith every day, and was an active leader of youth and women’s groups for decades, a telephone distress centre volunteer and national board member, as well as being active in other local charities. She loved her garden, and especially the night sky. We will always remember her smile and laughter.
While Mom and Dad travelled extensively during his early retirement, Richmond Hill always called them home.
Mom will be missed by many whose lives she has touched, both near and far, but most especially by her family.
Special thanks to Dr. Luke Bui, to Dr. Muffaddal Abdulali for taking on Mom’s care and opening doors where others failed, and to Dr. Tommy Tung and the staff at Southlake Regional Health Centre and Southlake Village for their care.
Friends may call at the MARSHALL FUNERAL HOME, 10366 Yonge Street, Richmond Hill on Wednesday, July 12 from 6-8pm. Service in our Chapel on Thursday July 13 at 2pm, with visitation one hour prior. Interment Victoria Square Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society or to the charity of your choice would be appreciated.
