Doris Belle nee Eastham Galbraith 2017

2017
Obituary Overview
Lovingly Remembered
Doris was born in Calgary in the former General Hospital, the daughter of Dr. Charles & Mrs. Florence Eastham. She was predeceased by one sister, Rena (Burness). She married Curly Galbraith in 1955 and they enjoyed 55 years together. She had five children. Her son Brent and daughter Sharon died before Doris did, but remained very much alive in her heart. Her three sons and their spouses Stan & Frankie of Edmonton, Roger & Elaine of Calgary and Brian & Nicole of Barrie were with her in her final days. She had ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren. The poems she wrote for birthday gifts were cherished. Doris was a devoted lifetime member of Grace Presbyterian Church and was well-known for her enthusiasm in baking and selling Christmas cakes and making chicken pies for the bazaar. She also brought her energy to the Red Cross as a volunteer in World War II as a member of the Corps greeting troop trains and for many years sewing with the Rotary Partners for Red Cross. She worked in administration at the Palliser Hotel and moved from that to become the Executive Secretary of the Rotary Club of Calgary – that’s where she met Curly. She also served as secretary to Rotary District Governors on three occasions and believed in all that Rotary offered to local communities and internationally. When Curly was elected Director of Rotary International they travelled the world – such an opportunity for a gal raised in Calgary in the 1920s where milk was delivered by horse drawn carts! Doris continued to be active with Rotary by writing the words to a song celebrating the Rotary Club of Calgary’s 100th anniversary and being the driving force behind the Curly Galbraith Global Memorial committee. She was at her happiest when they lived on an acreage west of Calgary. They had horses and she could be found on the tractor harrowing hay. She happily spent her recent years at Chateau Renoir where she had many friends and she was known for arranging a collection for Christmas gifts for the staff. Doris was treated generously and kindly by many members of the medical and health care professions through many medical and surgical events and she was most grateful for that care. She especially appreciated the care she received from Dr. Pam Campbell. In her final days at Bow View Manor she was fortunate to have very attentive care by staff of good cheer and warm humour. A Memorial Service will be held in the Spring to share the memories that so many have of Doris. She personified a belief that the world is made better by the actions of each individual. Donations in her memory may be made to the Curly Galbraith Global Memorial Fund of the Rotary Club of Calgary (562-1010-1 St SW, Calgary, AB T2R 1K4).
