Obituary for Doreen Erlendson
Doreen Vivian Erlendson
December 20, 1933 – March 18, 2017
Peacefully in her sleep, on March 18, 2017, at River East Personal Care Home, Doreen moved on to her next journey of life, to reunite with her loved ones.
Mom was predeceased by her beloved husband, Henry in 2010 and her beloved daughter, Debra Lee in 1994. Mom was also predeceased by her parents, Frank and Mary Smart, and her brothers Jim and Lyle.
Surviving with her memory, that will be in our hearts forever, are daughter, Sam and son-in law- Dave, two grandsons, Derek (Kendra) and Jo (Chloe) and granddaughter, Barilee. Also, three precious great-granddaughters, Gracie, Kinsley and Oakley. Mom is also survived by her sisters, Shirley and Betty Anne and brothers, Ralph, Allen and Russell, as well as, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.
Doreen was born December 20, 1933, in Battleford, Saskatchewan. She married the love of her life, Henry, on September 18, 1951, and they were married for 58 years, until Henry’s passing in 2010. During their life together, they were blessed with two daughters Debra Lee and Sandra Dee. They lived in many towns throughout Saskatchewan and Manitoba, as Henry was employed with Canadian National Railway, which required them to relocate several times. They purchased a general store in Dubuc, Saskatchewan, which Doreen managed, as well as, styling hair in the attached hair salon. In 1974, they moved to Transcona, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, as Mom had developed some serious health issues.
Although, Doreen’s number one job and top priority was always taking care of her family, she still held down several management positions. She managed Shoe World, Factory Outlet and Hans Christian Toys, where she made many friends. In 1994, Doreen lost her eldest daughter, Debra Lee, and was heart-broken, but she carried on and gave all her love to her family, always putting them first.
Doreen’s grandchildren will forever hold all her love and memories in their heart. They had many special years and holidays with both their Grandma and Grandpa, who loved them dearly and were so proud of them. They will always have precious memories of their road trips to the Calgary Stampede and to visit friends in Peachland, British Columbia. They will always remember their summers and winters at the family cottage at Grand Marais, where Doreen and Hank had moved to enjoy their retirement. Mom was a proud and devoted Grandma, who faithfully attended her grandchildren’s hockey and soccer games, in addition to their school activities. Mom was overjoyed, when she was blessed with her three amazing great-granddaughters. Mom’s health was failing, but she was especially proud that she was able to attend the wedding for her youngest grandson, Jo, in August of 2016.
Mom was an amazing cook, who loved gardening, going to the horse races, and bingo. Mom and Dad enjoyed many trips to Arizona and Las Vegas and casino trips with friends and family. Mom was an avid fan who loved the Winnipeg Jets, Blue Bombers and watching curling.
Mom’s health deteriorated the last few years, and as a family we did our best to make sure she was happy and comfortable. However, we knew life was difficult for her and she tried not to show her great suffering. We will miss her dearly and hold our memories of her in our hearts forever. Thank you to all who have tried to make her life happy and easier at River East Personal Care Home. Special thank you to Donna.
In accordance with Doreen wishes, cremation has taken place and no service will be held.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Doreens memory may be made to Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter, 3062 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3K 0Y1
