Obituary
It is with deep sadness that Donna Powell’s sisters announce her sudden and unexpected passing in Edmonton on March 2, 2017 at age 68.
Donna was born in Regina, Saskatchewan in April 1948 and lived in southern Saskatchewan before moving to Saskatoon in 1962, where she completed high school at Walter Murray Collegiate.
After completing her Bachelor of Education with a major in fine arts at U of S in 1973, Donna moved to St. Albert to teach at Paul Kane High School, where she designed the art program. She continued in the St. Albert Public School District throughout her career until her retirement in 2012, as Vice Principal at Paul Kane High School, Muriel Martin Elementary and Bellerose Composite High School, where she also led the International Baccalaureate Program and developed the innovative Bellerose IB Youth Mentoring Program with inner city schools.
Donna was predeceased by her parents William and Grace Powell, several aunts and uncles, cousins and a brother-in-law.
She is survived by sisters Sharon Matthias, Carol Weisgerber (David), Janet Goodwin (Bill), nephews and nieces Raymond (Sue and grand-nephew Nicholas), Lindsay, Kristi and Jonathan.
It was Donna’s wish to be cremated without a formal service, and to contribute organs for transplant. As people who knew her are spread around the world, her sisters are celebrating Donna’s life with a virtual community memorial. If you wish to join, please light a candle on March 19 at 4 pm MST (daylight savings) to spend time reflecting with us on what Donna meant in your life and to celebrate the legacies we all are building as we go through life. Donna’s legacy lives on through her art and the many friends, colleagues and students whose lives she influenced.
Memorial donations may be made to Edmonton Community Foundation Donna Powell Legacy fund, for scholarships to Bellerose Composite graduating students via their website:

Thanks to the Emergency Medical Responders who came quickly, the Physicians and Staff at Royal Alexandra Hospital Emergency Room and the residents at her apartment who helped. Donna’s passing has reminded us of the importance to have emergency contact information in your wallet, who know your directions regarding organ transplantation and the location of your will and any safety deposit box keys.
