Dr. Donald W. McDonald, DVM, MSc, was born in Ripley Ontario and graduated from the Ontario veterinary college in Guelph in 1954. He opened his practice in Daysland Alberta that same year. In 1955 he moved his practice to Lacombe where he met and married his wife Jean in 1966. He obtained an MSc. from the University of Saskatoon and was appointed the provincial animal pathologist for Alberta in 1967 until his retirement in 1992. He is a life member of the ABVMA and the American equivalent. Don had a lifelong interest in education and military history. He attended spring sessions of adult education at the U of A, is a published author, and was instrumental in writing the history of veterinary medicine in Alberta. He was a regular contributor to the a ABVMA magazine and wrote several featured articles published during the Alberta centennial in 2005. He remained active in his community. He was a Life member of the 418 (City of Edmonton) Squadron Association and a long term volunteer at the aviation Museum on Kingsway. He was presented the Queens Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife Jean of Edmonton, sons Donald Macdonald of Fairview, AB, Roderick MacDonald of Lake Louise, AB, one grandchild, and brother Bob (Anna) MacDonald of New Brunswick.
He was predeceased by his sister Margaret Foyston and brother Douglas MacDonald.
A private family service will be held at a later date.
If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions in lieu of flowers can be made to the Alberta S.P.C.A.
