Donald MacKenzie Morrison
(CN)
It is with heavy hearts that we, the family, announce the
peaceful passing of our loving father, grandfather and great
grandfather, Donald MacKenzie Morrison, on November 17, 2017 at the
Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born in St. Ann’s, Victoria County, he was the son of the
late Malcolm and Hughena (MacKenzie) Morrison.
Donald began his 40 year policing career with the city of
Sydney Police Department at age 20. He would later join the CN Police
Force advancing over the years, retiring as an Inspector. Although he
would formally retire at age 60, Dad continued to demonstrate his
passion for helping others and supporting his community, exhibited
extensively through his volunteer work.
As a member of
Bethel Presbyterian Church, Dad was well known for his kindness and
compassion toward others. He was extensively involved in the church
and volunteered countless hours with numerous charities and
organizations including The Children’s Wish Foundation, Shriners for
Sick Children, Meals on Wheels and Big Brothers Big Sisters. He was a
former president of the Sydney and District Little League and The Boys
and Girls Clubs, and served on the Board of Directors for Hardwood
Hill cemetery. He was a dedicated member of the Masonic Lodge.
Dad was described by many as a true gentleman. He was an avid
Leafs fan with an unforgiving sweet tooth and love of dogs, in
particular his best bud Pawco. Regardless of the need, he was always
there to provide love and support to his family of which he was
extremely proud. He demonstrated a gentle kindness in all that he did,
exemplifying hard work, selflessness, and a genuine concern for
others.
Donald is survived by his daughter, Karen (Keith) Sharp,
Toronto, ON; son, Malcolm, Sydney; brother, Jackie (Diane) MacEachern,
Tarbot; grandchildren, Kyle, Courtney, Amanda (Chris) and Brittany
(Matthew); great grandchildren, Isaac and Isla, and several nieces and
nephews. He will also be sadly missed by his dear friend, Valerie
Rhude.
Donald was predeceased by his wife, Elsie (Hinkley); son,
Hughie; daughter-in-law, Pamela Morrison; siblings, Annie Nicholson,
Nora Ross and Angus Frank, as well as his best buddy,
Pawco.
The family would like to sincerely thank the staff of
Harbourstone Enhanced Care, Steelworkers Lane for their care and
compassion over this past year. It has been a great comfort knowing
that Dad was well supported and cared for with the dignity and respect
he himself, showed to so many over the course of his life. Our family
will fondly remember his time there. We would also like to extend our
thanks to Dr. John Archibald for his many years of professionalism and
care toward our father, and to the staff and volunteers at the An Cala
Palliative Care Unit for supporting him and our family so
completely.
Interment will be in Goose Cove Cemetery, St. Ann’s on
November 21, 2017 at 11 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 4 p.m.
at Bethel Presbyterian Church, Sydney. with Rev. Bob Lyle officiating;
reception to follow in the church hall.
