Obituary Overview
In Loving Memory
Surrounded by the love of his life Lorraine, and family, Don passed away on Saturday, December 2, 2017 after a brief and tough fight with a heart condition.
Don will be remembered by his loving wife of 26 years, Lorraine; sons Kirby and Kelly (Robin Cameron); daughters Carolyn Newman and Connie; sisters Colette Skiftun (Orvel), Joanne Williams (Bob), Shelley Daoust (Emil); sisters-in-law Kathy Hill and Lynne Kosteniuk (Ned); and brothers-in-law Gerry Dammann (Gayle) and Bill Murray (Lori); stepdaughters Laurie Flaman (David) and Jodi Wist (Darin); and stepson Cory Flaman (Robyn). He is also fondly remembered by numerous grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins, as well as countless friends – anyone who knew Don was his friend, and he always knew how to make people laugh and feel special.
Don was born to Cliff and Olga Hill on November 12, 1936, and resided on a farm near Colfax and later at Lang. Don moved to Regina in 1956 and pursued a career with the City of Regina with the last several years being a Supervisor in Public Works until his retirement in 1993. In 1991 he married Lorraine, and they began a truly wonderful journey of friendship, love and the joining of two families. They always enjoyed their summers in Waskesiu and later on enjoyed travelling to Phoenix for a month or so in the winter.
Don was a loving husband, father and grandfather and made many friends throughout his lifetime. At an early age he began his curling career which lasted until the time of his passing. Don competed at a high level in curling in the 1960’s and 70’s, and on through the years with various teammates. He competed in and won many bonspiels, city championships and in 1977, achieved the huge accomplishment of winning the Saskatchewan Open Cash Spiel. Following his retirement, he became the President of the Highland Daylighters League, a position he held for 20 years.
Don volunteered in many roles in Regina. Of note is his incredible contribution to the curling leagues that he helped run for countless years. When Don knocked at the door, many businesses knew that he would cajole them into a donation for whatever cause Don was involved in.
Don was predeceased by his parents Cliff and Olga Hill; stepmother Irene Hill; the mother of his children Olga; sister Darlene; brother Stan; and in-laws Norman and Della Murray.
A CELEBRATION of LIFE will be held at Lakeview United Church, 3200 McCallum Avenue, Regina, SK on Friday, December 8, 2017 at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Don may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 1910 McIntyre Street, Regina, SK S4P 2R3 as Don was a 16-year survivor of prostate cancer, or to a charity of your choice.
Arrangements entrusted to Regina Funeral Home and Cemetery (306) 789-8850.
