Obituary

ECKERT – Dolores Eckert, beloved wife of Jake, passed away quietly at Sunrise Gardens in Brooks in the early morning of April 3, 2017, after living with CIDP for several years. She was 79 years old.
Dolores was born in the farmhouse near Bardo, close to Tofield, Alberta, on October 5, 1938. Dolores accepted Jesus as her Saviour at the age of 11 and became a baptized member of the Salem Mennonite Church in Tofield, Alberta. In 1957, at the age of 18, she married Marvin Lloyd Lehman. Over the next 5 years, they were blessed with four children: Kevin, Rose, Rita and Wesley. They bought a small farm near Ryley and were content. In 1973, a tractor accident took the life of Rita. It was a struggle for a while to get life back to normal and just when things were settling down, Marvin’s life was taken in another farming accident. Dolores sold the farm and moved to the town of Tofield to be closer to her parents for their support.
About four years later, Dolores was introduced to Jake Eckert and they were married a short six months later. This union brought three more beautiful children to the family as Jake came with his three children, Lillian, Eric, and Ron. They lived on a farm near Duchess for seven years and then they moved into Brooks.
Grandchildren in this blended family came fast and furious. Ronald, Rebecca, Benjamin, Karina, Kristina, Glen, Adrian, Austin, Janessa, Danielle, Amanda, Justin, Jessica, Jasmine, Jaylene, Tahneal, Brin, Gavin. Great grandchildren: Jacob, Jordan, Melody, Kida, Kaid, Shayla, Amber, Asher, Caleb, Aleah, Rayna. Though the two families are blended, we have always felt a part of the whole picture.
Dolores was active in the church in many ways throughout her life. Dolores prayed often for her children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her prayers and bible reading were a big part of her life. She also served as Women’s Aglow president and bookkeeper for Newell Christian School.
Lately, her iPad became an important way for her to communicate and text with children and grandchildren. She enjoyed learning how to work and play on it. She especially liked to use it to listen to the bible and hymns and she saved many family photos on it. Dolores’s heart was big and between her and Jake, a lot of people were counted as a part of their family and included at meals and fellowship. Their door was always open. She will be missed by many people.
Dolores was predeceased by her daughter, Rita, in September 1973 and her husband, Marvin, August 1978, her parents John Wideman and Edna Wideman, sister Lucille Boettger and brother Joseph Wideman. She is survived by her husband, Jacob Eckert; children: Kevin (Kelly) Lehman, Rose (Harry) Borkent, Wes (Lois) Lehman, Lillian (John) Duenk, Eric (Sheila) Eckert, Ron (Bonnie) Eckert; 18 grandchildren and their spouses; 12 great-grandchildren; as well as one aunt, Ella May Burnstad of Camrose.
Though the last few years were difficult, it was hard to find Dolores without a few smiles. She handled this disease with grace. We will miss her terribly, but we would never wish her back from the peace of Heaven and the happy reunions she is having with family and friends. She will be remembered with love.
Beside her picture are some two-toned roses, the meaning behind the roses is: A New Beginning, New Life. And that is what we believe she has now. We would like to thank the staff at Sunrise for their loving attention to Dolores. Any friends or family wishing to make a donation in her memory are welcome to donate to the Brooks Health Foundation, specified towards Making Dialysis a Reality in Brooks.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, April 10 at 2 PM at the Brooks Alliance Church. A family graveside service will be held at Salem Mennonite Church near Tofield, AB.
