Obituary for Mr. Dmytro “”Matt”” Hrynchuk
Dmytro “Matt” Hrynchuk
November 11, 1922 – December 14, 2017
On December 14, 2017 Dmytro (Matt) Hrynchuk, at the age of 95, passed away peacefully in Hogarth Riverview Manor with his loving family by his side.
Matt was born on November 11, 1922 to Peter and Stafrona Hrynchuk in the Ukraine. Matt served in the army during World War II, and in 1947 came to Canada and made Thunder Bay his home. In 1954 he met Pearl Daciw and they married in August 1956.
Matt was an entrepreneur in his early days in Thunder Bay, owning and operating a restaurant, the “Exchange Café”, on Simpson Street, followed by a convenience store on Mary Street, in which his wife Pearl also worked.
Matt worked for Great Lakes Pulp and Paper Company’s bush camps in various locations until 1956 when he obtained a position at their Fort William plant. There he worked at various positions until becoming an equipment operator and enjoyed that position until his retirement in 1987. After he retired, he and Pearl decided to build a new home, and that was their pride and joy. Their passion was gardening and keeping their property in great shape. Matt and Pearl also enjoyed many years of camping at Graham Lake until having to give it up due to health conditions. They particularly loved picking blueberries and mushrooms and looked forward to each summer season.
Matt was predeceased by his wife Pearl in 2016, son Jim Daciw, brother-in-law Harry Husiak and wife Mildred, brother-in-law Michael Husiak and wife Grace, sister-in-law Katherine Kochalyk and husband Michael, and other relatives in Ukraine. He is survived by daughter Marilyn (Larry Clausen) and granddaughter April Clausen, as well as nieces and nephews.
The family expresses heartfelt thanks for the compassionate care Matt received from the staff on 5 North at Hogarth Riverview Manor.
Funeral Services for the late Mr. Matt Hrynchuk will be held on Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at 11:00am in the WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 West Gore Street at James, celebrated by Father Pawlo Berezniak. Interment will follow in Mountainview Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held one hour prior to service time.
Should family and friends desire, donations may be made in memory of Matt Hrynchuk to St. Joseph’s Care Group or the Alzheimer Society of Thunder Bay.
