Obituary Overview
David J. Hawrysh
David J. Hawrysh, 87 years of age, fell asleep in The Lord, December 3, 2017 at Royal University Hospital, Saskatoon, SK.
David was born August 13, 1930, the youngest of 14 children of Ivan & Efymia Hawrysh at the family homestead in the district of Redberry Park, SK. David attended public school at Rus School, located on the home quarter, and at Volya School in the Glaslyn District. He attended high school at Nutana Collegiate, residing at the ‘Old Mohyla Institute’ on Victoria and Main, where he made many life-long friends. David enrolled in Pre-Med at the U of S, until he came down with a bad bout of mumps. After a year of recovery, he heard the sound of wedding bells and asked his future wife, Anna Yakiwchuk, for her hand in marriage. David & Anna were married August 12, 1954 in Hafford, SK. David began farming with his brother Yaroslaw and also worked as the repair man for the Hafford Rural Telephone Co. Meanwhile Anna took up employment as the Hafford Telephone Central Office, where they resided. In 1958, David took up employment at SASK POWER and became a Journeyman Lineman within the Rural Electrification Program. In February 1961, with children growing and approaching school age, David & Anna decided to return to plant their roots at the Hawrysh Homestead, to provide a steady home environment for their family of four. On the farm David thrived at making something out of nothing. Improving engineers’ mistakes on his equipment was his forte. David wasn’t scared to approach a problem, usually having the issue dealt with, before you knew there was a problem. He looked ahead to see what new crop would work to help the farm succeed. David enjoyed telling stories of days gone by usually rounding out each one with a joke about the situation.
David and Anna were active members of St. Mary’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Belyk’s Borden), All Saints Ukrainian Orthodox Church and Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral in Saskatoon.
In 1997, David and Anna moved off the homestead to live in Borden for six years and then they moved to Scott Tower in Saskatoon, making many new acquaintances in both communities.
In 1990, David became ill with Lupus, which at times made life challenging.
David was predeceased by his parents Ivan & Efymia (Kinash); siblings: Mary Hawrysh, Anne (Steve) Bodnarchuk, Helen (George) Kuchar, Natalia (John) Evanishen, Polly (Andy) Karpyshyn, Serafina (Albert) Guest, Nestor (Doreen) Hawrysh, Volodymyr (Minnie) Hawrysh, Anton Hawrysh, and Sofia (Steve) Matiation.
David is survived by his wife of 63 years Anna (Yakiwchuk); children: Sonia (John), Tim, Theo, Andrew (Janet); grandchildren: William (Sharon), Andrea (Bohdan), Marianne, Paula, Joseph (Christine), Anthony (Jenn), Melanie (Bryan), Alanna (Dalton); great-grandchildren: Angelina, Brady, Nova, Paul; brother Yaroslaw (Stella); sisters Olive (Nick) Kindrachuk, and Mary (Stan) Woytiuk.

Fr. Taras Makowsky and Very Rev. Fr. Bohdan Demczuk officiating. Interment in Borden Cemetery, Borden, SK at 2:30 p.m.
