Obituary of Daphne Shick
DAPHNE LORRAINE (CARON) SHICK
SEPTEMBER 6, 1934 – DECEMBER 15, 2017
It is with deep sadness that the family announces the passing of our beloved mother and grandy. Daphne passed away in her 83rd year after a courageous four-year fight with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. She is predeceased by her beloved husband of 61 years, Larry, and lovingly remembered by her cherished children, Melodie (John Porter), Greg (John Malloy), Tannis (Darcy McCombs), Linda (Joe DiMassimo), and two wonderful granddaughters Stephanie and Katie Porter. Daphne passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving children, grandchildren and grand dogs.
Daphne was born in Westmount, Montreal, and daughter to Raymond and Blossom (Harding) Caron, sister to Trevor, Derek and Melodie and Aunt to many. Daphne graduated from Miss Edgar’s & Miss Cramp’s School and not only excelled in her studies but also in swimming, diving, horseback riding (she rode the Rocky Mountains on horseback) and was an accomplished ballerina. She spent many happy summers as a Camp Counsellor for impoverished children and at her family cottage in Magog.
Mum always put family first and gave tirelessly to those in need. She began her volunteer career as a ‘candy striper’ at the Montreal General Hospital and later became an active member of the Junior League. She married her soulmate Larry, and as an Air Force wife, she moved frequently before settling down in Montreal where they raised their four children. The family moved to Toronto and once the children had finished university, she was determined to rejoin the workforce. Always dressed elegantly, she chose to work at Jaeger because she loved their clothes and soon became their top salesperson. A few years later, she was delighted to accept the esteemed position of Personal Shopper for Tiffany’s.
Outside of work, Daphne was a gourmet cook, consummate hostess and an expert bridge player. Passionate for the welfare of animals, she spearheaded a program to bring dogs into palliative care units to make patients feel better. She championed the underdog and gave many volunteer hours to the Queen Street Mental Health Centre. Her kindness and generosity of spirit was appreciated by everyone and she was fiercely loyal to her friends. Mum loved travel, animals and playing bridge at the Rosedale Golf Club, The Granite Club and The Monday Club but above all she enjoyed spending time with her family.
We will remember our Mummy and Grandy as a shining example of strength, courage and grace. She instilled in all around her the principles of honesty, integrity, kindness and most of all love.
There will be a service to remember and celebrate the life of Daphne Shick on Friday, December 22nd at 10:30 a.m. at the Lawrence Park Community Church, located at 2180 Bayview Avenue in Toronto. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Ontario Lung Association or the Toronto Humane Society. Condolences, photographs and memories may be forwarded through www.humphreymilesnewbigging.com.
