Cyril was a Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather, Brother, Uncle, farmer, a Friend, and long term member of the Wawota community.
Cyril was born May 29, 1929 in Wawota, he was the eldest child of Amos and Frances Hutchison. He has two siblings a sister Shirley and brother Larry. He attended the Model School, (not Modeling School, even though he was a handsome guy ). The school was located approximately 2 miles south of the Family farm. Cyril would often tell stories of how he walked to and from school uphill both ways.
Growing up on the farm he was involved with working with horses and cattle, and was a member of the 4H beef club. Cyril grew up in a time where the land was farmed with Horses, and lots of manual labor. Cyril saw many changes as farming technology progressed. As a teenager Cyril spent many days golfing, and evenings dancing at Clark’s Resort and surrounding town dances.
Cyril spent most of his life living and farming in the Wawota area, until at the age of 24 he went to work at a Langley BC feed Plant. Cyril found more than just work, he found his future wife Florence, of 62 years. They met at a dance, however they both came with different dates, Cyril and Florence danced till the cows came home. According to Cyril it was love at first site, Florence was not so sure, but he won her over and they were married in 1954 in Langley BC.
They returned to the farm except for winter of 1959 when Cyril drove a logging truck in Williams Lake BC. They moved into Wawota in 1983 but continued to farm until they retired in 1997. Cyril supplemented the farming income by doing various jobs in the area, like snow plow club, hauling gravel and grain, helping Carscadden’s , etc.
While on the farm they raised two daughters Ellen and Christine.
Cyril has five grandchildren and three great grandsons that he was very proud of. The grand kids were the only ones that were able to call him Grampa Cy. He encouraged his family to be the best they could be. He loved and supported his family. In return they all loved him dearly.
Cyril’s interests were: golfing, dancing, curling, playing cards with friends and family. After retiring he developed a love for camping in the Vanamera, wood working, and gardening. He was proud to supply the family with fresh vegetable every fall. He even tried fishing. He caught his first fish at the age of 75, even though he lived 10 miles from Kenosee Lake. We wanted him to throw it back, but he would not allow it. It took him 75 years to catch it and 3 min to eat it.
Cyril was a very sociable person. He could be found talking and telling stories to all his friends, neighbours and even perfect strangers. Cyril enjoyed starting conversations with people he did not know, and eventually, through the conversation he found someone they both knew. Cyril liked to tease and tell jokes. If he could make you laugh it made his day. It was guaranteed he would pull an April fools prank every year. During the 1982 family reunion, he was the brunt of such a prank: his nephew crawled up on the house roof and did the ice bucket challenge and dosed Cyril with cold water. He got a kick out of the payback. Once Cyril was teasing his dad about hunting ducks, Cyril told him he would haul out all the ducks that his dad could shoot with that double barreled shotgun. As it turns out the joke was on him, he had to haul out at least 15 ducks from a slough. That’s probably why he had a fear of water.
Cyril had a fascination with the party line. On the farm they didn’t have cable TV to occupy his time. Their phone never rang more than twice, if it went three rings you knew he wasn’t home. When someone called you had to get out of his way, as he would rush to be the first one to answer. If the doorbell and the phone rang at the same time, Chaos ensued; the cordless phone was a life saver!
He loved when all the family could get together. On his 87th Birthday while in the Weyburn home, with a cheeky grin he made a comment to Florence as he was looking down the table at his family, “ to think we started all this .“ Cyril was so proud of his family.
Even his last days in the home, Cyril was still telling stories of his family, the horses, and the tractors.
A true Farmer and family man!
