1929 ~ CLIFFORD ALBERT “CLIFF” SMITH ~ 2017
Clifford Albert Smith of Medicine Hat, beloved husband of Elsie Smith, passed away on Friday, July 14th, 2017 at the age of 87 years. Cliff leaves to cherish his memory his six children: Elaine (Randy) Jahnke, Terry (Gayle) Smith, Raymond (Paulette) Smith, Doug (Crystal) Smith, Donnie (Dixie) Smith, and Garry (Dawna) Smith; thirteen grandchildren, Jamie Jahnke (Jen McKenzie), Jannae (Scott) Bridgeman, Clint Jahnke, Tyler (Colleen) Smith, Mitchell (Shawna) Smith, Tianna Smith (Klint Kornfield), Rachel Smith, Corey (Chantal) Smith, Duane Smith, Jayden Smith, Delaney Smith, Devan Smith ( Amy Halvorson), and Dakota Smith; seven great-grandchildren, Leo, Ellie and Gray, Hudson, Grant, Halle and Brett; one sister, Irene Shiels; two sister in-laws, Alice Smith and Melva Wallin; and numerous nieces and nephews. Cliff was predeceased by his father and mother, James and Alice Smith; in-laws, Earnest and Minnie Wallin; brother, Reg Smith; sister, Doris Gilchrist; sister in-law, Myrtle (Tootie) McIntosh: brother in-laws, Pete Shiels, Gordon Gilchrist, Frank Wallin, Norman Wallin and Morrison McIntosh; and grandchild Mathew Smith. Cliff was born in Tompkins, Saskatchewan, on July 29, 1929. He was raised in the Nadeville district south of Hazlet, Saskatchewan, and attended school at Honora School. Cliff met his future wife Elsie, at a dance at the White Craig School, and they were married April 25, 1951 in Medicine Hat. Cliff and Elsie continued to live on the Smith family homestead, south of Hazelet, operating the family farm and ranch. In 1976 they bought a ranch in the Mendham district and ranched there until 1994, when they retired to Medicine Hat. Throughout the years, Cliff was actively involved with horse and beef 4H clubs, coaching his son’s hockey teams, serving as a Councillor for the R.M., as well as serving on the board of the Leader Hospital. In Medicine Hat he volunteered at The Post and Hillcrest Church for many years. Cliff and Elsie made numerous trips to Cuba and took with them medical supplies, baseball gloves and dolls. He enjoyed bowling, golf, and fishing. Cliff participated in many trail rides such as the North West Mounted Police Trail Ride and the Centennial Trail Ride with his grandchildren. The Funeral Service will be held at Hillcrest Evangelical Missionary Church 3785 – 13th Avenue SE MEDICINE HAT, AB T1B 1J2, on Tuesday, July 18th, 2017 at 1:30 pm with Pastor Mark Bolender officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery. Memorial gifts in Cliff’s memory may be made to the Leader Hospital.
