Christine Baker

The family of Christine Patricia Marie Baker (nee Racine) sorrowfully announces her sudden and unexpected passing on July 17, 2017 as a result of an accident. She slipped away peacefully at l’Hopital de l’Enfant Jesus in Quebec City surrounded by her loving husband, daughters, sons in-law, grandson, sisters, nieces and nephew by her side. The thoughts and prayers of family and friends, as well as those of the countless people she touched throughout her life were felt by all present.
Chris was born on March 12, 1959 in Sturgeon Falls. She is predeceased by her parents Jean Paul and Anne Mary (nee Gosson) Racine; cherished wife of Graham Baker, and adoring mother to her “girdles”: Sarah Renaudette (Randy) of Sturgeon Falls; Emily Barry (Craig) of Etobicoke; Heather Baker and Allison Baker (Jonah Brunet) both of Toronto and treasured daughter-in-law of Jennifer and the late Frederick Baker. Loving memories of her will be cherished by her three precious grandchildren Noah Renaudette, Kaleb and Gavyn Barry.
Beloved sister to Louise Dubyk (Bernie Thorne) of Oshawa; the late Raymond Racine (Mary Carter) of Nepean; Monique Racine (Ron Parker) and Stephanie Thomas (Shawn) of Bowmanville and the late Jean Paul Jr. (Stephanie Van Doleweerd) (Greg Wotten). Adored sister-in-law of Peter Baker (Pamela) of Brampton.
Chris took her role of Aunt seriously and cherished her nieces and nephews; Craig and Dayna Dubyk; Vanessa, Renee and Jenni Theriault; Terra and Erica Thomas; Bradley Baker as well as her great nieces Larken, Mya and Nevaeh.
Spending time with family was all that it took to bring a smile to her face, her family meant everything to her and were truly her pride and joy.
Chris began her nursing career in the Palliative Care Unit of St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto. From the beginning, her dedication to the job and to her patients was apparent; she worked hard and loved harder. Chris met the love of her life, Graham, while still in training at St. Mike’s in 1978. They were married in 1980 and over the course of the next few years they had four girls. They moved from Orangeville to Barrie, and finally settled in the small township of Chisholm, ON. There they raised their children and made their house a home.
Soon after Chris started working at Eastholme Home for the Aged in Powassan, ON. Over the course of her 27 year career there, she looked after an incalculable amount of patients, providing them not only with medical care but with the personal support they needed to feel at home. Her care also extended to the families of her patients. Chris had a seemingly immeasurable amount of love to give and she shared it with anyone willing to receive it. She was a true angel, comforting patients and their families at the end of their journeys.
The past few years saw the loss of her father-in-law, sister-in-law, two brothers and both of her parents. When asked how she was able to cope with these hardships, Chris would answer: “my family and my faith.” Chris’s faith was an integral part of both her personal and professional life. She started every morning with a cup of coffee (it could only ever be black and from the freshest pot), listening to the birds and saying her prayers.
Her constant positive energy (despite working shift work) was contagious. Chris could light up a room just by walking in the door. She did everything to the fullest (never “half- hassed,” as she would say). Chris lived every day like it was her last, and made sure that her love for those around her was known.
A quote from one of Chris’s favorite books, Tuesdays with Morrie, says it best: “The way you get meaning in your life is to devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning.” Chris did exactly this: the ripple effect of her unwavering kindness continues to be felt by all those who were lucky enough to meet her.
“We’ll love you forever, we’ll like you for always, as long as we’re living, our Mother you’ll be.”
We love you Mom, and your “uge” “uman” heart.
The family will receive relatives and friends to celebrate and honour Christine’s life at Theoret-Bourgeois Funeral home, 119 King St, Sturgeon Falls. Visitation Sunday, July 23. 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.
A mass of Christian burial to be celebrated by Fr. Trevor Scarfone, assisted by Deacon Tim Foster at St. Terese d’Avila Church in Cache Bay will be held Monday, July 24 at 11:00 a.m.
Even in death Chris continues to give of herself to others through the donation of her organs. If you wish to, the family has requested that you consider giving blood, or signing your organ donor card in memory of Christine. In lieu of flowers a perennial plant to be used in a memory garden for her husband Graham would be appreciated.
