Chief Warrent Officer (Retired) Royden G. Messer
1930-2017
Formerly of Harvey Station, New Brunswick Royden passed away in
Strathmore, Alberta on July 10, 2017 in his 87th year. He is survived
by his son Glenwood (Roxanne) of Hanna, Alberta; his grandson Royden
and great grandson Eli of Bear River, Nova Scotia; his son Gordon
(Janette), and granddaughters Robyn and Chelsea of Langdon, Alberta.
He was pre-deceased by his loving wife Helen of 63 years in April
2017, his father in 1938, sister Irene and brother Herbert, and his
mother Lottie in 2012 at age 104. He is survived by several nieces,
nephews and cousins.
He had a long career in the Canadian Armed Forces, serving in Canada
and abroad with the Royal Canadian Dragoons in Germany in 1951-53, and
Petawawa until 1957. He also served Peacekeeping UNEF 1Middle East
1958, 8th Canadian Hussars, Gagetown and Germany NATO 1959-62. Royden
was appointed Regimental Sergeant Major of the 8th Canadian Hussars
(Princess Louises) from 1975-77 and then appointed Base CWO
Cornwallis, Nova Scotia from 1977-78. He completed his career as the
Cadet Camp Argonaut Sergeant Major from 1979 to 1984. In 1989, in
recognition of the improvements to the security and access to the
ranges and training areas in Camp Petawawa, a road in the training
area was named “Messer Trail” in his honour. In 1975 he
was invested into the award of the Order Medal of Military Merit in a
ceremony in Rideault Hall and presented by the Governor General in the
grade of Member.
Royden loved the outdoors and his leisure time was spent fishing and
hunting in and around the lakes of Harvey Station. He was a member of
the Strathmore Legion and a Life Member of the Centurion Club and a
member and supporter of the Radley Walters Chapter of the 8th Canadian
Hussars Association.
In accordance with his wishes cremation has occurred. There is to be
no viewing or funeral. A family burial will take place at a later
