Obituary for Charles Strickland
It is with great sadness that the family of Charles Ellison Strickland, 85 of Fauxburg, announces his passing on Monday, December 25, 2017 at the Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg.
Born in Blue Rocks, he was the son of the late Charles James and Grace Evelyn (Hynick) (Strickland) Oxner.
Charles seagoing career started at an early age sailing on the S. S. City of New York; and then was one of the last crew members to fish on the Theresa O’Connor. He continued through his working life as Chief Engineer with National Sea Products and Riverport Seafood, retiring after more than 50 years service.
Charles enjoyed the simple pleasures of life spending time at home with his family and enjoying cooking for family, his daily walks, tending to his gardens and spending many happy hours with his grandson, Ryan.
Charles is survived by his wife, Marilyn of 50 years, Charles (Stella) of Halifax daughter, Tammy (Paul) Wilson, Italy Cross; grandchildren, Ryan, Sharon and Sharlene, sister in-law Louise Strickland, several nieces, nephews and good family friend, Frances Webber, Lunenburg.
He was predeceased by his parents, step-father, Bert Oxner and brother, Clayton.
A service to celebrate Charles’s life will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Hwy. # 3, Lunenburg, Rev. Alvin Westgate, officiating. Interment will be at a later date at Sunny Valley Cemetery, Centre.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Heart and Stroke foundation, Canadian Cancer Society or to any other charity.
