Obituary for Carol Marquis
Carol Marquis
June 24th, 1967 – November 30th, 2017
Carol Ann Marquis (aged 50) of Calgary, AB passed away peacefully at home, with Kathy and their pets at her side, on November 30, 2017 after a joy filled and adventurous life. For the last 20 years, Multiple Sclerosis was Carol’s unwanted companion. Despite the relentless nature of MS, Carol milked the beauty out of each day, pushing the limits of her body and those around her to experience everything possible. She was a thunderbolt of enthusiasm and determination.
Carol was born in Edmonton, AB on June 24, 1967. She grew up in Cranbrook, BC where she developed her character and her love of everything wild. She excelled in school and was involved in Students Council, sports, and music programs. She graduated in 1985 and moved to Calgary to attend the Foothills School of Nursing and then the University of Calgary. Her nursing career was full and varied…her smile and warmth brightened the days of many. Always up for adventure, Carol nursed in Albuquerque, New Mexico and then in Charlotte, North Carolina and traveled throughout Asia and Central America. She settled in Calgary and excelled as an Emergency at the Calgary General and Peter Lougheed Centre and Oncology nurse at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre.
Carol had an unwavering love for nature and animals. Her domestic pets were loved beyond measure, despite any minor or major flaws in their character. And nothing gave Carol more joy that a nest of owlets or the sight of any animal regardless of how drab or splendid. To her last days Carol took every opportunity to be outside in nature.
What set Carol apart from most was her unbridled interest in others and in the world around her. She read always, questioned constantly, and was relentlessly curious about everything and everyone. This coupled with a quick glowing smile and eruptive laughter made Carol truly valued and loved by those who knew her.
Carol loved reading and could often be found out in the garden bird-watching with a book in her lap. Her favorite poem was The Summer Day by Mary Oliver; Carol would change the word “stroll” to “roll” and would repeat the last line when she read it out loud, “Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”
Carol will be missed and lovingly remembered by her life partner Kathy Paul (Calgary, AB); parents Donald and Shirley Marquis (Lethbridge, AB); brother and sister-in-law Edward and Laurie Marquis (Prince George, BC); sister and sister-in-law Carmen Marquis and Adrienne Weare (Calgary, AB); nieces and nephews John Marquis, Anna Marquis, Kiana Munroe, and Georgia Weare; as well as numerous friends, extended family, co-workers, and pets.
Carol would like to thank Kathy Paul for her loving care and patience as her MS progressed. She would also want to thank her family doctor, Heidi Fell; Dr. Metz and Nurses Sharon and Lori at the MS clinic; and Samantha Lasas and her niece Kiana Munroe who both assisted Carol during the last few difficult years.
A Celebration of Carol’s life will be held at the South Calgary Funeral Centre (12700 Macleod Trail South) on Sunday, December 17, 2017 at 1:00 pm. A light lunch will be served to give people an opportunity to visit with one another. Rather than flowers, Carol would ask that people remembering her would go outside into nature and take time to notice and appreciate the wonder found there. Donations in memory of Carol may be made to the U of C Rehabilitation & Fitness Program for Persons with Disabilities
Free…
Free is an eagle soaring among snowy peaks,
The buffeting winds fresh and crisp.
Free is a deer bounding through soft sage scented grasses,
Purple clovers dancing in the breeze.
Free is a shooting star sparkling through the deep blue sky,
Catching awed gazes from children below.
You have bounded and soared through life,
A sparkling smile every step of the way.
You have known freedom,
And once again you are free.
Kiana Munroe
