Barry James Colman,
of Palmerston, passed away after a lengthy illness at Spruce Lodge in Stratford on Monday, November 20th, 2017. Barry is survived by his loving and devoted wife of fifty years, Ann (Paulsen) Colman. He will be sorely missed by his children, Sarah Colman and Glenn Cressman (Stratford), Jeff and Nicole Colman (Port Elgin), and Scott and Dana Colman (Woodstock). He is remembered lovingly by his grandchildren Julia, Jacob, Jennah, Devan, Desmond, Jude, Max, and Tyson, as well as by his sister Sandy (Colman) Wagter (London) and brother-in-law Andy and Joanne Paulsen (Cambridge). He is predeceased by his parents, Jack and Shirley Colman (London) and his brother-in-law, Fred Wagter (London). Fondly remembered by his nieces and nephews and friends.
Barry was born on August 7th, 1942 in London, Ontario, where he grew up and attended Clarke Road Secondary School and Western University. Barry and Ann were married in 1967 and moved to Palmerston that same year, after Barry found a job at Norwell DSS. Barry was a teacher and, ultimately, Head of Guidance at the school for thirty years and developed many close friendships with his teaching colleagues. He played hockey and baseball, and later served as a coach and mentor to many students. Barry was also an active member of the Lions’ Club, serving as club President twice and Secretary/Treasurer many times. Barry contributed significantly to many Lions’ projects, using his woodworking, bricklaying and handyman skills to benefit our community. Barry’s handiwork can also be seen in many homes across town, and projects at his sister’s house. He built a cottage in Tobermory, with his sons and few friends, that has become a beloved retreat for the family. Barry will be remembered fondly for his generosity, his sense of humour, and the twinkle of mischief in his eye.
Cremation has taken place.
The family will receive friends at the Heritage Funeral Home, Palmerston on Sunday, November 26, 2017 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Pastor Ralph Dwarika will conduct a Memorial Service of Remembrance in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Wallace Township on Monday, November 27, 2017 at 11:00 a.m.
As expressions of sympathy, donations to Palmerston Lions Park, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church or the Alzheimer’s Society of Perth County would be appreciated by the family.
