Barbara Marie Tanner (née Borman) died peacefully at The Colonel Belcher Care Center on December 9, 2017 in Calgary at the age of 70 years. Barbara Tanner is survived by husband John; children, Colleen Tanner and Karoline Sandhurst; and grandchildren Arianna, Greyson and Reid all of Calgary. Barbara was born on July 20, 1947 in Stratford, Ontario. She graduated from the Saint Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing in Kitchener, Ontario in 1969. She met and married John Tanner at the University of Waterloo on December 5, 1969. On their honeymoon, they came to Calgary where Barbara started her nursing career at the Calgary General hospital and continued her career in various nursing roles in institutions until her retirement in 1991. She was a dedicated nurse known for providing respectful and positive care. Barbara loved to cook and fed us all well. We’ll miss her jars of homemade pickles, lemon meringue pie, and perfect trays of Christmas baking. She loved the great outdoors and was known to hike up mountains and scramble down slopes with reckless abandon, usually followed by eating a big burger straight from the grill. All kinds of games became a demonstration of her competitive spirit. Challenging her to a game of scrabble, you quickly became aware that she had memorized every 2 letter word ever created. Barbara kept an immaculate garden and was accomplished in all kinds of needlework. She knitted beautiful creations for her children and grandchildren, and taught us all that the best thing to do when you’re stressed out is to clean something. Barbara took great pride in her grandchildren and took breaks from babysitting only to travel the world on a cruise ship. She and John made many friends and had incredible adventures, completing 30 cruises together. Barbara faced numerous health challenges throughout her life with tenacity and courage. In 2013 she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease entering the Colonel Belcher Care Centre in 2015. A celebration of life is to be held in the New Year.
