Audrey Irene (née Kimball) Hayward
1929-2017
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing
of Irene Hayward, aged 88, on September 19, 2017.
She was born in Sunbury County, to the late Harold G. and Lena M.
(Smith) Kimball.
She was married on September 18, 1951 to John F. Hayward (d.
2010), and raised four children; Katherine (Kate) (Gary Waite),
Lindsay (Shelley), Elizabeth, and David (Jane).
She is also survived by two grand-daughters, Jessica
(Nicholas Brown) and Eleanor, and two great grand-daughters, Callie
and Georgia Brown.
She leaves as well her sister Joyce Lewis of Salisbury,
two nephews Timothy Lewis (Heather) and Robin Lewis (Keri)
and their respective children, Sarah, Thomas, Joshua, and
Grace.
She was predeceased by her brothers, Murray and
Keith, both killed in action in 1944, and Alan, also in 1944, as well
as her sister Jean (2000).
A graduate of Business College, she worked initially as a
bookkeeper and in her early married years, in foreign exchange with
the Bank of Nova Scotia in Toronto.
Irene enjoyed a broad range of interests including gardening
and bird watching, and had a lively sense of humour. She was
a voracious reader and remained topical on world and local news
throughout her life. Her interest in history and geneaology led to a
long-term stint as a volunteer at the Provincial Archives. She was
also a volunteer with the Laubach Society, providing the gift
of literacy.
She was a life-long member of the Oromocto, and later Skyline
Acres, United Baptist Church and enjoyed hosting the monthly Church
women’s group meetings in her home.
In recent years, Irene looked forward to Thursday afternoons,
when she hosted a weekly Scrabble Club among great
friends.
Of the many life-lessons she imparted, perhaps her greatest
legacy is quiet generosity. She practiced random acts of kindness long
before the term was coined, supporting family, friends, and
complete strangers with encouragement and assistance.
Irene is resting at McAdam’s Funeral Home, 160 York
St., Fredericton where visitation will be held on Sunday,
September 24 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. A funeral service will be held at
Skyline Acres United Baptist Church on Monday, September 25, 2017 at
1:00 pm. A reception will be held in the church following
the service. Anyone choosing to honour her memory through a donation
may do so through a gift to support literacy at the Fredericton Public
Library, or to the IWK hospital.
