It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Arthur Gessner on Saturday, October 21, 2017 at the age of 95.
He will be lovingly remembered by his sons, Brian (Lisa), David, grandchildren, Dario and Danica, and numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his wife Peggy, parents, John and Anna Gessner, and all of his siblings: Katie, Jack, Millie, Caroline, Sophie, Charlie and Albert. Art was born in St. Andrews, Manitoba and grew up on the family farm. While being stationed with the Royal Canadian Air Force in Weyburn, Saskatchewan he met his beloved, Peggy Lawrence and was married June 5, 1948. They eventually settled in Winnipeg where Art was employed with TransCanada Airlines (now Air Canada).
Art joined the Air Force in 1942 and was a World War II veteran. It was at this time, he learned the aircraft mechanical technical trade. He was able to apply these skills towards a career with Air Canada as a foreman and team leader at the Winnipeg Overhaul Maintenance Mechanical Base. He also spent time as an instructor with Air Canada training the new employees.
Art’s life was one of devotion and dedication first to his family then his friends, his church and his community.
Art spent many volunteer hours in helping build the Charleswood United Church and the Charleswood Curling Club. Art was the first to start a seniors league for curlers at the Charleswood Curling Club. He was President of the league and on the Board of Director for the curling club. Arthur was devoted to his community and volunteered many hours to numerous activities and committees especially the Charleswood United Church. Art’s faith was strong and very important to him. He was proud to volunteer at the World Curling Championships in 1991 and the Canadian Curling Championship Brier in 2000 in Winnipeg.
Art was a life time member of the Legion and the Masons. Here he helped raise funds for charities as well as devoting his time to others in need. Art was involved in various board positions over the years.
Art’s pastimes included participating in and watching curling, hockey, football, baseball, soccer and golf. He especially was proud of both his sons playing at these sports events. In his spare time, he coached hockey for several years including coaching his sons. Art was also an avid curler and made many friends in the curling community. Art also spent many hours assisting in building his new home and enjoyed working on his cars.
Art and Peggy travelled to Europe several times, to New York, LA and other US destinations across Canada. Art especially loved the Alaskan cruise he and Peggy took in the 1990’s.
The essence of Art will always be remembered by his charming smile, his bright eyes, the warmth and strength of his handshake, his unconditional love and his generous nature.
In his last 8 years he lived at the Wellington Retirement Home and participated as a board member together with actively participating in many activities.
Art was truly a Charleswood “ landmark” as reflected in his 68 years that he lived in the community amongst friends and neighbours. He will truly be missed by many.
