Annie Ilienko
1923 – 2017
On November 2, 2017 Annie Ilienko of Swan River passed away at the age of 94 years.
Annie was born September 10, 1923 to Paul and Honorka Osadchuk of Kobzar District in Saskatchewan, the fourth child of six girls and four boys (Mary deceased Spanish flu 1918). She attended Grade 1 and 2 in Kobzar but a barn yard fire caused a move to Durban where she went to school until Grade 7. Leaving school she worked on the family farm and for neighbours haying, stooking, thrashing, and housekeeping.
On August 1, 1943 she married Andrew Ilienko of Cando Saskatchewan where they farmed until 1945 when they moved to Durban. They loaded some cows, four horses, some equipment and furniture into a boxcar and with brother Tony caring for the stock the move was made . Here they slowly expanded their farming activities as well as raising six children. Mom was always busy milking cows, raising pigs and chickens and a large garden that produced an abundance of produce and every garden had an assortment of brilliant flowers. Oh how she loved her flowers, her happy time admiring her flowers while tending the garden. With the flowers came lawn ornaments, so with scroll saw in hand Mom made many cut-outs and painted them also building a wishing well and the lawn decorating continued. Her brother John who lived in British Columbia sent boxes of fruit that would arrive via rail so jars and jars of fruit were made as well as preserves from the garden. Mom was an excellent cook who also enjoyed cake decorating and her decorative roses were picture perfect. When it came to making pies, wow! a crust that melts in your mouth. Winter was a time to slow down and relax. For her this was time for knitting, cross-stitch, hook weave and embroidering as well as making countless quilts and blankets for all her children, grandchildren and anyone who wanted one.
Life on their farm was quiet and peaceful but that tranquility was gone when Highway 83 was constructed by the farmyard. First came the heavy equipment then the constant hum of traffic which annoyed Mom. Farm life was made easier as shortly after the highway was completed, electric power came through so it was time to put the kerosene lamps away.
In 1977 Mom and Dad moved into Swan River and of course the request for a garden area. Along with the garden Mom made sure she had space for her flowers and ornaments.
Throughout her life Mom was a faithful member of the Orthodox Church in Durban and then Swan River. Whether it was cleaning the church, bake sales or any activities, she was there to assist as needed. Mom also made financial contributions to St. Andrew College Endowment Fund and Crystal Lake Bible Camp.
Mom was predeceased by her husband Andrew; parents Paul and Honorka Osadchuk; brothers John, Bill and Tony; sisters Mary Osadchuk, Ida Bobyk, Nettie Stecenko; sons in law Robert Hawryluk, Maurice Salamandyk and Alan Spencer; infant granddaughter Kimberley Ann Hawryluk and Bayley Evangeline Bresky.
Left to cherish her memory are her six children, Kathy Hawryluk, Sonia Spencer, Irene Salamandyk, Audrey Nimetz, Eugene(Wendy) and Steve(Brenda); fifteen grandchildren and thirty great grandchildren; brother Milton and sisters Jessie Sheluk and Pauline Blayney; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
