Anna Maria Musacchio (nee Sabella) December 13, 1925 – April 27, 2017
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and Nonna at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg at the age of 91.
Forever cherishing her memory are her daughter Ada, son Michael, son-in-law Dr. John Ducas, granddaughter Dr. Robin Ducas, grandson-in-law Dr. Jason Elliott, great grandchildren Isabella and Arianna, granddaughter Dr. Anne Ducas and grandson James Ducas. She will forever be missed by her sister Cristina and brother-in-law Aldo De Santis, her sister-in-law Candida Sabella, numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends in Canada and Italy. Also mourning her passing are Dr. Diane Ducas and family and the entire Zimarino family.
Anna Maria was predeceased by her husband Umberto in 1984, parents Giuseppe and Lucia, brother Constantino, sister-in-law Louisa, brother Vincenzo, and sister Suor Giuseppina Sabella (Elena).
Anna Maria was born in Portocannone, Italy on December 13, 1925. She married Umberto, the love of her life in 1948. Together they worked very hard to build a life in Italy. They immigrated to Canada in 1958 and their plan was to work in Canada for a few years and then move back to Italy. Once here, they fell in love with the country and the people. The realization that Canada offered more opportunities for their children made up their minds to stay and build a new life in Montreal. Immediately upon her arrival to Canada Anna Maria started to work outside the home. She spent the majority of her career working as a seamstress at the Sample Dress Manufacturing Company. Her work was impeccable and much to her consternation she was often asked to fix the mistakes of some co-workers. In 1984 when Sample Dress closed down she used her talents to design and sew clothes for neighbours and family. She made many new friends this way.
Anna Maria had hands of gold and could do practically anything she set her mind to. She could sew, cook, knit, crochet, and weave cane baskets. She was a perfectionist and had no qualms about restarting a project from scratch if it didn’t meet her standards.
Anna Maria was widowed at the age of 58 and since her children moved to Winnipeg and Toronto she was left by herself in Montreal. She lived independently for the next thirty years, thriving and making friends of all ages. Special thanks to her Montreal neighbour Giuseppe (Pepe) Missori, for his help and support.
In 2013 she moved to Winnipeg to live with her family. She found a true friend in Maria Immacolata Garofalo, who sadly passed away on December 2016. The two Nonnas telephoned each other regularly and would sit side by side at get-togethers enjoying each other’s company and reminiscing.
Anna Maria always looked forward to attending the Centro 55+ Seniors Program group at the Centro Caboto. We would like to thank all the great friends, staff and volunteers she met there for the enjoyment and companionship they gave her. Thank you especially to Pina and Rocco Macchia for being so kind to her. Thank you to Drs. Bellas, Penner and Kepron, the nurses and the other health care staff on H7 and GA4 of the Health Sciences Centre who provided excellent and compassionate care.
Visitation will be at Complexes funéraires Yves Légaré, 7200, Newman Blvd, LaSalle QC, H8N 1X2, on May 7th from 14:00-17:00. Mass will be celebrated at the Madre dei Cristiani Church, 7935 rue Lefebvre, LaSalle QC, H8N 2A9 on May 8th at 09:30. According to her wishes Anna Maria will be buried in Montreal next to her beloved husband Umberto at the Cote-des-Neiges Cemetery in the Marguerite-Bourgeoys Mausoleum. A memorial service will be held in Winnipeg at a later date, with details to be announced.
In lieu of flowers a donation can be made in Anna Maria’s memory to a charity of your choice.
