PENNEY, ALPHONSUS LIGUORI Died peacefully at St. Patrick’s Mercy Home, surrounded by his family, on Tuesday, December 12, 2017, ALPHONSUS LIGUORI PENNEY, Archbishop Emeritus of the Archdiocese of St. John’s, at the age of 93 years. Predeceased by his parents, Catherine and Alphonsus Penney, sister Mary Theresa, brothers Fr. McDermott, Fintan, Joseph and his wife Mary, Denis and his wife Ruth, Paul and his wife Irene, and Randal. Leaving to mourn his brother priests and bishops, religious sisters and brothers, sister-in-law Gitta Penney, and a large number of nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, relatives and friends. Special gratitude to the staff, sisters and volunteers of St. Patrick’s Mercy Home, his doctor, Sylvia Mouland, and all who cared so well for him. Visitation at St. Patrick’s Mercy Home Chapel on Wednesday, December 13 1:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m., and at the Basilica/Cathedral of St. John the Baptist on Thursday, December 14 1:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m., with Vigil at 7:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial Friday, December 15 at 11:00 a.m. at the Basilica/Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. Interment to follow in the priests’ plot at Belvedere Cemetery. No flowers by request. Donations may be made to Emmaus House.
