Obituary for Allan (Al) Wrightson
The family of Al Wrightson announce his passing on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at the age of 92 years. Al grew up in Saskatoon and attended Caswell School and Bedford Road Collegiate. He met his wife Betty in 1953 and married in 1954. Al joined the RCAF in 1943, and was stationed in Halifax and Victoria. His talents as a hockey player were recognized and he played for the air force team. After the war, Al was invited to play for an American Hockey League team in Buffalo, NY but declined it and returned home to Saskatoon. Al had a career at The Marshall Wells Hardware Company from 1946 – 1972. He had great memories of those days and was an avid collector of Marshall Wells’ memorabilia. He was a member of the Willow Park G&CC for many years and later as a regular at Buffalo Run. Al racked up many Hole-in-One’s, and shot his age at 88. An active senior, Al spent his retirement golfing everyday or playing hockey with the Southwood Seniors. When he gave up hockey he was a dedicated participant with the Jimmy Condon skating seniors. At 89, he was featured on CTV as an Inspiring Albertan for his active lifestyle. Al was a family man and he loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed gardening, camping, walking and anything that got him outside. His indoor hobbies included listening to big band music and making wooden cars in his basement shop. He won a number of ribbons over the years at the Calgary Stampede for his entries. His kind and gentle spirit touched everyone who knew him. He will be greatly missed. Al is survived by his wife Elizabeth (Betty), son Mark, daughter Jill and three grandchildren; John Allan Wrightson, Michael Bennett Wrightson and Aimee Elizabeth Neilson.
