Alice Blanche Jack – 1926-2017

Alice Blanche Jack
1926-2017
Jack, Alice Blanche – It is with broken
hearts that we announce the passing of our mother in her 91st year on
Monday, February 20, 2017. Born in Harpellville, Guysborough County on
September 19, 1926 to Theodore and Della (Kaiser) Harpell. She was the
last surviving member of her immediate family. Alice lived in
Harpellville, where she received her education and later became a
teacher in the one room school house. She met the “love of her
life” and married in 1946 to Roy Huntley Jack of Port Bickerton,
where they built a home, built a life and raised five children. Alice
worked alongside her husband all her life. They owned and operated two
fishing vessels and a grocery store in Port Bickerton. In 1971 they
moved to the Annapolis Valley and settled in Grafton, Kings County,
where they owned and operated a vegetable farm and later retired.
Alice enjoyed spending time with her church groups, where she was an
active member throughout her life. She enjoyed sewing, quilting,
embroidery and cooking but her talent was writing poetry about her
family and childhood memories, with one published in an anthology
called Winter Storm. She enjoyed a good game of cards, Scrabble,
crosswords and game shows on TV. Alice especially loved spending time
with her family, many trips, drives and family gatherings. She had a
special relationship with each of her grandchildren and her great
grandchildren were all very precious to her. Besides her parents,
Alice was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Roy Huntley Jack;
daughter, Carolyn Anne (Jack) Furlong; infant granddaughter, Melinda
Darlene Furlong; sisters, Ellie Hiltz, Pearl Jordan and Rosie Smith;
brothers, Austin, Wilfred and Vincent. Alice is survived by her
children, Wendell (Mabel), Tottenham, Ontario; Graham (Sherry),
Dartmouth; Delmar, Grafton; and Valerie (Brian) Randall, Berwick;
son-in-law, Roy Furlong, Indian Harbour Lake, Guysborough County;
seven grandchildren, Sonia, John, Jason, Malena, Dora Dawn, Kristy and
Jimmy; 18 great grandchildren. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m.
Wednesday, February 22, 2017 in the White Family Funeral Home,
Kentville. Visitation will also be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday,
February 23, 2017 in St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Port Bickerton, where
the funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, February 24,
2017, Reverend Kristen MacKenzie officiating. Burial will take place
in the church cemetery. The family would like to thank the staff of
Evergreen Home for Special Care, where Alice had been living for the
past year and a half, for their kindness, compassion and their hugs to
mom. Donations in memory may be made to a charity of your choice.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and
Cremation Services, Kentville; and the dignified and compassionate
care of G.W. Giffin Funeral Home Ltd., 17545 Highway 316, Country
Harbour. Online condolences may be made at
