After a lengthy and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s, Akke left us to be with her Lord and Saviour on December 18 / 2017, at the age of 80. Akke was born in Leeuwarden, The Netherlands, to Thijs and Jeltje vanderWoude, beginning a full life dedicated to serving others. She married the love of her life in 1959, and together she and John immigrated that same year to Montreal, Quebec, where she continued working as a nurse before embarking on the adventure of motherhood. Even while raising five children, she always found time to volunteer: teaching Sunday school, delivering Meals on Wheels, and caring for anyone who needed her, including a beautiful young boy with severe spina bifida who touched her heart, and a brilliant woman with Alzheimer’s, which broke her heart. Akke loved to sing and spent many wonderful years in the choir at Montreal’s First Christian Reformed Church, while John played the organ. In 1980 Akke and John moved their family to Portugal, where she continued to serve, teaching kindergarten at the International Christian School in Cascais, a job she absolutely loved. After moving from Portugal to Miami, Florida and subsequently back to Montreal, Quebec, Akke and John retired in 1999 and settled in Calgary, close to two of their children. Akke was a devoted wife to John and a much loved and respected mother to Yolande Berkenbosch (Carl), Diane Numan (Art), Kim Cofman (Nicolas), Jarrett Jellema (Rose) and Terence Jellema (Carala), and a loving Oma to 16 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She will be missed and loved by all. Private ceremony to be held at Eden Brook Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Cochrane’s Bethany Care Centre, where for over eight years Akke was lovingly cared for by their truly dedicated staff (Bethany Care Centre, 302 Quigley Drive, Cochrane, AB, T4C 1M2, Canada).
