Aivlys Veronica Prendergast - November 16

Aivlys Veronica Prendergast – November 16, 1932 – August 29, 2017

Aivlys Veronica Prendergast was born in Kingston, Jamaica on November 16th, 1932. She was the oldest daughter of Cecil and Sylvia Reid. She and her 3 sisters, the “Reid Girls”, enjoyed close friendships that continued throughout their lives. Veronica admired the gentle character of her father and his devotion to his family. Her dad nicknamed her “Birdie”, which related to her small stature as well as to her singing voice. She became a Christian in her teens and, from then on, used her singing voice to proclaim the Gospel as a soloist and member of groups such as the Gospel Heralds and the Joe McGann quartet. Veronica loved her Daily Bread and was a generous and committed supporter of a number of ministries. Her Bible was well used, with page after page of highlighted verses and personal notes. Veronica loved the Gospel and was always willing to talk to anyone about Jesus Christ. She was not afraid to guide the young and the old into an understanding of how to spend eternity with a faithful, loving God. Veronica loved music and singing hymns. She played her favorite songs by ear on the piano and took violin and accordion lessons. Music flowed through her and continues to reach to the third generation.
Veronica enjoyed several years of working as a Medical Laboratory Technician specializing in Haematology in Jamaica and Canada. While still a young mom, she won a scholarship to do specialized research in London. Veronica lived in many places around the world while raising her family, before settling in Prince George, B.C. in 1970. She was married for over 30 years and had a strong commitment to family. Veronica had tremendous love for her kids, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, praying for them faithfully. She was a beloved “Auntie Birdie” to many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends of her children, and generations of church friends. She is predeceased by her sister, Joan (Sunshine) Wight, and her son, Paul Prendergast. Veronica is survived by her aunt, Ethline Bullock; sisters, Fay Lumsden and Edna (Nena) Subratie; daughters, Charlene (Doug) Holtby, Angela Prendergast, and Trudy (Rob) Polley; daughter-in-law, Marie Pinder; grandchildren, Bethany (Jermaine), Jessica, Teddy, Mitchell, Duncan, Quinn, Naomi, Ellie, and Sarah; and great-grandchildren, Miles, Madelyn, and Marcus. Veronica will be greatly missed, but we glory in this: she now gazes into the face of the lover of her soul, Jesus.
A Celebration of Her Life is planned for 10:30 am on Saturday, September 2nd at Shepherd’s Care Christian Church, Kensington Village 12603 – 135 Avenue, Edmonton.
Thank you to the staff at Shepherd’s Care Kensington for caring for our Birdie!
Poem on her father, Cecil Reid’s, headstone:
Pause my friend as you walk by,
As you are now, so once was I
As I am now, you soon will be
Prepare yourself to follow me
