Obituary for Ada Jean Lee
Ada Jean Lee
July 21, 1923 to November 14, 2017
Jean died peacefully on Tuesday afternoon, November 14, with family by her side. She is survived by nieces and nephews, Scott Lee (Mary Jane), Cynthia Ketterer (Jack), Barbara Robertson (John), Garfield Lee (Marianne), and Kathryn Lee; great nieces and nephews, Christopher, Nicole, Christina, Jacqueline, Cameron and Duncan; great great nieces and nephews, Sophia, Joshua, Noah, and Nina; and sister-in-law Frances Lee.
Jean was predeceased by her parents, Garfield and Sarah Lee; brothers, Donald, Archie, and Gordon; and, recently, sister-in-law Kay Lee.
The second of four children, Jean grew up on Furby Street with her parents, brothers and grandmothers. The family suffered loss with the early deaths of little brother Donald in 1928 and father, Garfield, in 1939. Life was not easy, but it strengthened the bond between the surviving members. They moved to Mulvey Avenue shortly after their father’s death, where Jean lived with her mother for many years.
Commitment to family was top priority for Jean. She and her mother corresponded with and visited cousin Doris in Toronto, Uncle Bert in Brandon, and relatives in Lancashire, England. In later years, Jean spent warm times in Hawaii and Florida with Gordon and Frances.
Nieces and nephews remember Jean as the games master after family dinners. She was also the provider of outings – movie matinees, the Red River Ex, lunches at the Paddle Wheel, train rides at Assiniboine Park; and treats – fries smothered in salt and vinegar, ice cream, toffees from the candy counter at Eaton’s. She was generous with her time and attention, and never missed a birthday or special occasion. She was a colourful storyteller who kept family stories alive.
Jean had a long career at the Canadian Wheat Board. After retirement she kept in contact with friends and enjoyed outings around town. Although Jean suffered many medical setbacks, she continued to be sharp and bright, enjoying lively conversations with old and new friends. She valued, and was admired for, her fierce sense of independence.
The family would like to thank the staff at Lindenwood Manor and West Park Manor for their care of Jean in her final years.
Service will be held on Friday, December 1, 2017 at 2:00 p.m., Mosaic Funeral Centre, 1839 Inkster Boulevard.Winnipeg, MB.
