Peacefully, in the morning of November 13, 2017, our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Abe C. Loewen, went to be with the Lord. He passed away at the Red River Valley Lodge, Morris, MB, at the age of 94 years. His parents, Abram and Helena Loewen, 3 brothers and 3 sisters predeceased him.
Dad was born November 21, 1922 in Rosenhoff (south Rosenort). He attended the Rosenhoff North School with Math being his favorite subject. He spent a year at Mennonite Collegiate Institute in Gretna. Dad grew up on a farm, and farming continued to be his vocation, though he had a keen interest in education.
He was baptized as a young man and joined the Kleine Gemeinde (now the Evangelical Mennonite Church) at Rosenort where he remained a faithful member till his death.
He married his sweetheart on her birthday on June 27, 1948 and they have shared 69 years together. They purchased a farm close to his parents’ place. This became the homestead where all 5 children grew up.
Dad, with his dry wit, helped many committees wade through their agendas. The adult men’s Sunday School class appreciated Dad’s leadership for many years. He was a delegate for the Rosenort EMC to their annual conference meeting, a Credit Union board member, a Riverside Co-op board member, and a treasurer and trustee on the Rosenort School Board, among several other positions.
Dad experienced hardships during his life. He was a young teen during the 1930s. There were financial straits, health issues, a tornado, hail storms and several floods. He helped fight the 1950 and the 1979 floods, but evacuated Rosenort for the 1997 flood.
Dad and Mom sold the farm to their son, Rey, and moved to the town of Rosenort in 1985 and lived on Poplar Crescent for 17 years. The condo on Rose Lane became their new home. Dad made another move (2007) to the Red River Valley Lodge.
Dad and Mom travelled to various locales: LA, Grand Canyon, Torino on Vancouver Island, Florida, Black Hills, Yellowstone National Park, Ottawa, Pennsylvania; as well as, Dallas, Texas, and Lethbridge, Alberta to visit children and grandchildren.
Dad’s enjoyment centered around growing crops and helping people, preferably without any acknowledgement.
Dad’s physical handicaps became apparent over time. He suffered from a debilitating muscle weakness, though he never received a definitive diagnosis. He spent the last 17 years in a wheelchair.

Sister: Annie, and husband Henry Bartel
The family wishes to thank the nursing staff at the Red River Valley Lodge for the care they provided for our dad.
We would like to thank the family, friends and the church for the support and encouragement we have experienced during Dad’s very long journey through ill health.
The Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, November 19, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. at the Rosenort EMC, Rosenort, MB.
