Lovingly Remembered
Joe Babchuk, a former resident of Hafford, Saskatchewan, passed away peacefully at the age of 92 on December 21, 2017 in Sherwood Park, Alberta where he lived the past 8 years.
Joe was born on January 12, 1925 in Krydor, Saskatchewan and grew up on the family farm near Hafford, Saskatchewan. He attended Russ Public School, Borden High School, and Saskatoon Normal School (teacher’s college). After teaching for 10 years, first in rural and then in town schools, he made a career change. In 1956 he joined the staff of the Saskatoon post office where he worked for 30 years.
After retirement he moved to his home town of Hafford where he soon became involved in the community. He did volunteer work for a variety of local services: acting as president of the Hafford Senior Citizens Centre and as a board member of the Hafford Senior Housing Authority, delivering Meals on Wheels for Hafford Hospital home care, serving as secretary-treasurer of the Royal Canadian Legion Remembrance Day Committee, and helping the Hafford Recreation Board’s fundraising bingo operation.
Joe will be missed dearly by his brother Emil Babchuk of Sherwood Park, AB, his nephews, David (Caroline) Paulow of Warman, SK, Don (Lucille) Paulow of Hafford, SK, Dale (Linda) Paulow of Hafford, SK, Rodney Paulow of Hafford, SK, niece Sheila (Duane) McFadyen of Sherwood Park, AB, and nephews Iaian (Erika) Babchuk of Edmonton, AB and Michael (Iryna) Babchuk of Edmonton, AB. He also leaves behind many great nieces and nephews who will cherish the many delightful stories that chronicled his life.
Joe was predeceased by his parents, John and Katie Babchuk, his sisters, Mary Paulow and Helen Babchuk, his brothers, Edward Babchuk, Michael Babchuk, Alexander Babchuk, his brother-in-law, John Paulow, and his sister-in-law, Catherine Babchuk.
Joe had a painting and drawing talent which he used in school, at work and in retirement. Music was also of interest to him. At an early age he learned to play the violin and guitar for his own enjoyment.
Funeral arrangements are being made by Glenwood Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home in Sherwood Park, AB and will be announced at a later date.
